Then the Professor can devise a capsule made out bamboo and coconuts to get them off the island! ;D

I think the quote is, "The Professor can take a radio and a few coconuts and make a nuclear reactor...but he can't fix a 2 foot hole in a boat!"

All the reasons you stated for the standard ops are valid. My suggestion was only during the last test phase prior to the actual RTLS. Someplace off shore from the Cape in the leeside of a barrier island or sort or a lagoon for calmer water... I don’t see much on a map until you get to the north end of Florida or into Georgia though. If not firebrick or high temperature concrete, I guess you could pump water across the surface of the steel deck of the barge... A floating crane could move in to stabilize then.

Or you be ballsy and fly straight back to the launch site... ;D

I got you.  Yea, if there was a land location somewhere down range there could be a reason to try to land there initially.   But as you said, I don't think there's much down range for most trajectories Falcon would be flying.  If there was something that could be used, was large enough, and suitable to a landing right in the flight path, then you could be right, as a test while they work to RTLS.

As it is, I think they'll just start walking the stages back toward the launch site.  Doing larger boost backs, working on precision water lantings,  and getting as close to the Cape as they can before they run into FAA or CCAFS restrictions.  Then they'll work with the red tape and logistics of entering that air space and actually landing somewhere like LC-46.

History shows that the Castways' Lagoon has already has been visited by two manned spacecraft, one of which reusable, and capable of powered landings. Take that Dragon.  ;)

Pill is a synonym for Capsule... So Gilligan's Island episodes with the space capsules might have been representing a red pill and a blue pill....

Quote from: Morpheus
You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Does this mean that Gilligan's Island was really a dream world built to keep the characters under control?   I always thought that TV show was an example of the most thoughtful, layered, intelligent television ever produced.   :P

I'm staying on the island if Maryann stays!

What I will say is my "SpaceX pushing the boundaries" headline on the latest SpaceX article is about to become understatement of the year.
Ohhhh, I want to know, I want to know!  ;D

So who else is going to be like me and not get anything done all day now due to refreshing NSF all day?

Pretty sure it's not... I'm 3000 km away from there. Probably global.

PS I didn't want to brag[1], but I've seen it too. TOTALLY support taking it hidden because jobs might be at stake and TOTALLY want to see it all go public once it's all cleared. Because it's frigging awesome.

I'll be hiding my phone in class to check NSF forums all day at this rate.

No probably about it... but for now, probably is confined to this globe.

Note statement below... the mind boggles.

Brilliantly depicted! That is exactly what I experience.  It is like I should be wearing a heart rate monitor and remain under observation in hospital until we get the full story.

Once Chris gets the NSF store running, that should be one of the first t-shirts or bumper stickers. :)
