On September 28, 2012, Freedom Star was transferred to the U.S. Department of Transportation's James River Reserve Fleet for potential use as a training vessel.
But since SpaceX has indicated they will try to recover the stage they'll have access to some ship, but it probably isn't the Freedom Star.

Sounds like a good excuse for a training cruise to me.  But the James River is way up in Virginia.

I'm thinking we should get a spacex raft, good place to tan in the daytime and  a great place to watch launches around, say a barbi and a few drinks , in the evening or early morning ( like 4am etc).. may even get a change to see a stage land in the sea, if not we will know about success.. tidle wave.. spilled beer, not good

Please tell me they don't use the word "barbi" in your northern end of the Commonwealth!
Then you might tell us what you are going on about....
And doesn't your browser alert you to the word "tidle"?

No .. mine is known as a braai.. :)
About: all spacex launches are not exactly scheduled in daylight.
Browser is cheap .. simple download.. blame Google

The only good news for the day about CRS-3 is that it will probably revert to a daytime launch......  8)

In another thread there was a question about retrieval vessel for the booster stage.

The prototype is ready and will be on the water.

“ … e Freedom Star, a former space shuttle solid rocket booster recovery ship, is now a floating high tech camera and radar platform that will be stationed in the North Atlantic to track and capture images of the first commercial spacecraft carrying cargo to the International Space Station. … “

Wonder where Freedom Star will be late night on the 30th ?

I wonder how that imaging attempt went. I don't recall ever seeing any images released from ship based cameras during CRS-1.

It was too cloudy. They never tried again.

Hey, SpaceX... better get a move on with the Boca Chica pad! At least this didn't happen during a Mars window.  :-[

The irony that just after the delay a mysterious Chinese launch (probably orbit-bound) shows up with the launch time at almost the EXACT time (give or take a few minutes) that the Dragon was supposed to launch......  :-X

To F9/Dragon: ALL THESE LAUNCH DAYS ARE YOURS EXCEPT APRIL 15 ATTEMPT NO LAUNCHING THERE - Sea Launch Zenit launch in the way within an hour of yours and could distract Chris et al. (launch time for CRS-3 should be ~4:20 pm EDT; the Zenit launch is at 5:05 pm).

On the 'bright' side, there should be some good daylight views of the leg extension and soft landing....

Ends up launching at 02:46 UTC - the satellite went into orbit at the same time as when the Dragon reaches orbit and the 1st stage trying to touch down on the ocean surface!  :P

I think we can all agree that real steely-eyed missile men could satisfy range safety requirements with a few hours, a bunch of cat laser pointers, some mirrors, a TRS-80, and a whole lot of duct tape.

In my day we uploaded and downloaded both way through the SNOBOL in a PDP-8, and we liked it!!!

No wait, actually, I started out pretty much on TSR-80s.  :P

Oops I thought I was on the party thread... trim me if necessary!
