Gemini 8 and ADT, in card, 1/32nd scale
« on: 11/20/2013 03:43 pm »
Here's my latest. I shrunk Delta 7 Studio's Gemini 8/ADT card model from 1/24th to 1/32nd, used a variety of papers and added some scratchbuilt bits to model Gemini 8 and the Agenda Docking Target seconds before docking.

If anyone notes any glaring inaccuracies, let me know and if it doesn't involve too much cutting, I'll fix 'em....

So here's a question that has come up: I know Gemini 8 (or VIII) carried a maneuvering unit backpack, but did it also have those big handhold bars in the back of the adapter? If so, I need to add them to the model....

Actually, Gemini 8 didn't carry the MMU. It *did* have a backpack which Scott would have donned, and yes, it did have the bars for his hands and feet. The backpack was very similar to the MMU but had no rocket engines and nor did it have (I think) hand controllers on arms (there wouldn't have been much need, but who can tell?). The ESP - Extravehicular Support Pack - was basically an Apollo PLSS in the MMU mould line, though strictly as a backup/test. And yes, I'm simplifying lots here. A beefier hand held gas gun (HHMU) would have been used, plus the big chest pack as on the later EVAs. Scott would not have had Cernan's dark flameproof cowboy leggings.

For modellers, a Revell Ed White in the Aurora MMU sans top tanks and arms would be about right (and with the Aurora chest pack).

Thanks! That is most helpful and I appreciate it. Now one more question: what would the two "extendable handholds" on the adapter sections have looked like stowed, since I take it they would not have been extended at the moment depicted in my scene?

Back to the workbench....
