The Wernher Von Braun Symposium is Livestreaming its first day tomorrow. Keynote speaker is Wayne Hale, I'm chairing a roundtable with ATK/Boeing/Lockheed Martin/AerojetRocketdyne/Astrium NA/Dynetics, and "51D" will be chairing an afternoon panel on Washington operations...not sure if that'll be covered but the morning will be.

we're taking the day to try to talk about sustainability and how things are going to have to be done differently if we are to move forward.

Starts at 8:30 am Central Time here in the U.S.

Wonderful. Everyone keep an eye on this and add notes if you can.

I will look to create an article (or 10) out of it, so I'll cover Mr Hale and Ms Dittmar's segments.

Props to UAH for fostering lots of talent that is heading into the industry. Notes one of their recent examples, who is now at SpaceX.

Troy Trulock, Mayor of Madison. Former US Army too.

Thanks people for bringing cold weather with them.

Important for higher education to aid robotic and human exploration. Praise for commercial taking over LEO, allowing NASA to concentrate on BEO.

Reference to line up changes.....from General Bolden not being there etc. (Wayne Hale is more interesting anyway - my comment).

Don't forget your parking pass! ;)

Here we go with Mr Hale.

Says he's a poor sub for Bolden. (nonsense :))

Wants to talk about the future more than the past.

Notes previous speakers set to be at the Symposium would note great progress being made on Orion and SLS.

However, the problem is keeping the national focus on space exploration.

Notes how after a SRB test in Utah, he took some of the team to where the great railroad was built, nearby.

Notes the problem for the railroad - per a cited book - was "how to get the money". A story about creativity and risk taking, etc.

There are lessons to be learned here. Notes a scene in movie The Right Stuff, where a reporter asks a test pilot: "what makes an airplane fly?" - Answer "funding".

Von Braun - he did not think small. Look at that monster rocket....count the engines.

NASA came about due to a crisis over the Soviets (Sputnik, etc.)

Question was: Is there something we can beat the Soviets at?

Answer: The moon.

JFK speech references. "Say it with me" :)

We know JFK had his doubts. Recordings note the expenditure was only to beat the Soviets, that will wreck our budgets.

He didn't care much about the moon or the science, but he did care about beating the Soviets.

NASA was 5 percent of the national budget. Even Johnson knew it would have to be reduced. He closed the Saturn V assembly line.

Nixon, faced with a deficit and a war, decided it should be less than one percent.

Then came the Shuttle (never seen this pic before!)

Wayne Hale decided he would join NASA. He thought he would be working on Mars missions by the time he was in his 40s.

Increased government oversight, processes and requirements became part of the Shuttle program. Some were not value added.
