1/144th RealSpace Skylab
« on: 09/11/2013 11:15 pm »
After waiting 40 years, I finally have built a model of Skylab.  I remember building models out of Pringle cans and tin foil when I was in the 3rd grade, just because the Pringle can was the same size as my Revell Saturn V 3rd stage.

The resin parts of the kit are very clean and rather simple.  The challenge is the photo-etched brass used for the trusses and ATM Solar Arrays.  I just took my time and glued one joint each day, so building the arrays took about a week.

I finished the sun shade with the first one flown, as I wanted to represent Skylab 2 Mission, with my favorite astronaut, Pete Conrad in charge.

This had to be the most challenging model I have done in a while, but I am very, very happy with the results!

Here is my display with Skylab between the Airfix Saturn 1B-Skylab and Saturn V-Skylab.

Sweet!  Very nice work on America's first space station.

I don't know if I could build this kit, the photo etch is kind of intimidating to me.  But you did a great job.  Like the Skylab by the rocket display too (next to the Saturns).
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

Wow, this is a master piece, on which you can be proud of. These delicate structures inspire me with a respect, especially those fragile PE parts. And your amazing collection denotes you as an expert with years of experience.

Do you already have plans for a new project, maybe a Launch Tower for your nice shuttle stack?

Thanks for the comments!  It means a lot to get feedback from such talented modelers!

Next project was to be a scratch built Orion and ISS based Deep Space Habitat.  But, I may change that to a SLS based Skylab II now. Even though the ISS based DSH is almost done!

I also plan to start a Falcon/Dragon with the 3D printer parts I purchased from Shapeways.

Very Nice, I can appreciate the effort that goes into these models, I've been building models for 40 years.

Thanks Darren.  Your comments are much appreciated.

Below are a couple previews of my next projects.

A Orion/ ISS derived DSH and a Falcon 9-Dragon using 3D printed detail parts.  The Orion is made from a Plastruct cone and cylinders.  The DSH is using left over parts from my Revell ISS model.
