I'm driving up to Vandenberg on Sunday to see the launch.  Anyone know of a good place to watch from?  NASA says there is public viewing off of Lompoc Casamalia Rd., but if there's a better spot, I'm willing to poke around to find it.

I'm on the other end of the continent, but there is a separate launch viewing thread which may be able to answer your questions:  http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=32534.0
Some might consider the other end of the continent a bit farther away.  ;)

Here's what the 30th has to say:

Want to know where you can view Sunday's SpaceX launch?

Suggested on-base viewing sites are 35th Street and Wall Beach.

Suggested off-base public viewing sites are Floradale Avenue, Corral Road and Vandenberg Village. Harris Grade Road is also another favorite! SURF STATION will be closed for the launch.

If I like something on NSF, it's probably because I know it to be accurate.  Every once in a while, it's just something I agree with.  Facts generally receive the former.

Imagine for a second that in a different reality Musk had Bezos-scale money, and was going to develop SpaceX while ignoring the commercial orbital market - solely for the purpose of going to Mars.

Even if he had Bill Gates scale money I'd like to think he would have done it exactly the same way. Having a solid industrial base to support his dreams has many advantages.

To be on topic, that means we would still have the Cassiope Launch Party Thread. ;)

Here's hoping for a successful launch tomorrow, as well as a successful rendezvous and docking by Cygnus.

You know, with the hills, the trusses, the concrete ramp, the horizontal rocket, I feel like I've seen this somewhere before...

Very much so.  Relations between SpaceX and Orbital seem so much more cordial that with some other 'competitors'. And if we don't end up with two competing operational suppliers, COTS could be portrayed as a failure.

I expect we'll be celebrating with something stronger than cordial by Sunday evening   ;D

I'll be watching from the Valley of the Sun.  Can't make it to VAFB for this like the Landsat launch.  But Go Cassiope & SpaceX!
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

Man O Man I'm really excited for this launch! I'm hoping they show a split screen one with the first stage decending and the other of the second stage. Wow wouldn't that be something. I hope we get to see the braking trust maneuver as well as the final engine restart.

Anyone know if they will have a seperate team whose sole responsibility is first stage recovery?  Have to assume because it is simply a bonus part of the mission the main flight team won't spend much if any time being concerned about it

It would be amazing to catch a glimpse of the flip-and-burn even or especially from the viewpoint of the upper stage, if it happens close enough. There's a better than even chance of some sort of maneuver there, even if the whole thing isn't successful.

It would be unprecedented (a first stage burn to slow down), as far as I can tell. (Unless you count the Orbiter as a first stage... Though you could as well call it a second an third stage, too!)

My 3 year old girl is so excited about this launch. Hopefully it doesn't get scrubbed.  I'll have to bust out the youtube just incase

Listening to launch countdowns reminds me of a slow version of this:

I don't think we'll see anything of the 1st stage reentry test until after the live broadcast is over. But that is my speculation only.

Lars_J: You're probably right, but it depends on how long it takes for the first stage to flip and fire. There may be a chance of catching some of it after stage sep from the upper stage.

Here's the last flight of v1.0 for reference:

And flight 2 of v1.0 is here, showing a live feed from the first stage for 45 seconds after stage sep:

(at which point it is actually shown to have rotated naturally to roughly the right attitude for the braking burn...)

Thanks guys, it is good to know that there is another generation that is just as excited as I was back when I was there age; bodes well for the future of Space Flight  :D

Gramps

btw, have laid in 1/2 gallon, and 1.75 liters of vino for the celebrations  :o and that is cockeyed, not shocked LOL

I'm always excited for a SpaceX launch but this one seems a bit more exciting.

  GO SpaceX!

Lightly drop that big-ole 1st stage in the Pacific and bring it home.

I'm 55, a little younger than you.  I remember playing hooky from school to watch Gemini launches, and of course I was glued to the TV for all of the Apollo missions.

SpaceX is making me feel like a kid again.  Sadly, I don't know anybody else my age who is as excited about it as I am.
