In the haze of the Vandenburg slopes
The Falcon was learning the ropes
With barely a mention
They lit up the engine
Fulfilling the f-a-n-boys' fond hopes.

Well, I got home a couple of hours ago, so I would be drinking beer regardless of whether there was a hot fire or not.

But now I can say I'm celebrating!  Yay!  Yeah, that's the ticket.
The Space Age is just starting to get interesting.

Very good, although (nitpick alert) ;)
 - the SpaceX logo is always smaller, placed under the LOX tank so the text stays visible before/during launch.
 - the spacing between the cores will be slightly wider
 - the right most core is missing the propellant umbilicals

Still very good!

From that image it seems like the tail masts would be in the way of the outer cores.

Just made a quick edit, the cores are now the same length, moved the text and flag, and messed with the clamps at the bottom a bit.

@spectre How fast do they open? I can't recall from past launch videos. (assuming you're referring to these, I am quite illiterate to much terminology :x)

And now a quick and dirty edit with Dragon instead of a normal fairing... https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/575558/FH-mockup-dragon.png bit funny looking   ;D

I still can't get over how tall v1.1 is, it's really jarring when you look back and forth between it and v1.0. Gonna be cool seeing that telephone pole of a first stage come sailing back in!

The irony is that Ares I was also quite tall and skinny. And the first stage did make a splashdown!

Well, hopefully this splashdown will involve a less aggressive hydrobraking strategy  :P

I think what throws me off for F9 is the fairing - it feels disproportionately small compared to the huge length of the rocket itself.

Is that the TARDIS on the hill off to the left?

I think the white roof indicates it's the heavy version of the venerable type 40.

Or, far less likely, it's a porta-potty.

Here's a comparison image I made for another thread. (roughly to scale) Judge for yourself which one looks more ungainly...

It's entirely subjective, but I really do like the F9 better. Much cleaner, for one.

Not so subjectively, this one is going to try to get to orbit and do an unprecedented retro firing and vertical landing attempt (which almost certainly won't be 100% successful... this time).

Getting my lucky SpaceX coffee mug ready for the launch. I've had it for all the Falcon 9 launches. It's working so far.

The windows probably don't work out for this, but how awesome would it be if they launched in between the upcoming Antares and Atlas launches?
I flew on SOFIA four times.

I just checked the SpaceX Store, and they don't have any mugs now.

But what really shocked me is that they no longer have the "X" baseball cap.  I think it's way cooler than the "SpaceX" version.  I'm glad I bought one, even though I don't usually wear baseball caps.
