Rocket Candy
« on: 07/29/2013 04:20 pm »
I have been very interested in making my own rocket engines lately (solid fueled) so I scoured the internet looking for ideas. I found a method using shotgun shells filled with rocket candy, first you pound the primer out of the shell, than you mix the rocket candy it is sixty five percent saltpeter and thirty five percent powdered sugar, afterwards, you pour the powder into the shell and use a piece of wood and bodywork hammer to tamp the fuel, next, you need a plug some use hot-glue, but I have found wood to work well. The next step is to drill a hole where the primer used to be, then you just tape on a stick (like a bottle rocket), and insert a fuse and your rocket is ready to go. Yesterday I build some and they worked great, the first one was only half full, and went about forty feet in the air, maybe I will make a larger version later. If you have any questions, comments, concerns or observations please reply.

I have made many, many rockets using the saltpeter/sugar combo.

Your post made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.  Words like pound, drill, hammer and hot glue on a loaded shell......holy crap.
One eyed or four fingered comes to mind for a new nickname. Or worse.

Here's a good site to start with if you want to make you own sugar rockets.

Start with the safety section.

I think we have a misunderstanding, you use expended shells, one thing  that scared me though was the idea of making rockets with blackpowder.
