Revell 1:144 Space Shuttle Discovery / STS-133
« on: 07/08/2013 05:15 pm »
I recently finished this Revell 1/144 space shuttle stack as a tribute to Discovery's STS-133 mission.

The MLP is the one provided with the kit that I added details to make it look a bit more accurate. Although it's still under scale, I feel it makes a nice display base.

Here's a link to my online build thread on the ARC Forum:

Hi Mike,

Wow!  Looks right in every respect.  Much better than any of my shuttle stacks.

Thanks for showing that...Agree with Roma, an outstanding stack.
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

For folks who have built 1:144 models of the shuttle stack, which pieces should be painted prior to assembly, and which can wait until after gluing?
I flew on SOFIA four times.

In my experience, the only things that I'd paint before assembly would be the interior cockpit area (gray-because you can still see it through the windshield), and maybe the OMS pods.  (But even then I didn't pre-paint OMS pods on most of my shuttles).

Everything else can be assembled first, then the seams covered up with putty/filler, then coats of primer applied (white for orbiter/SRB, rust primer for ET), seams and imperfections sanded over, then coats of paint applied.

Beautiful work Crowe-T. I've been following you thread on ARC for the better part of two years and know how much work you put into this model. Well Done!

A really beautiful build, thank you for posting this,
Would it be possible to explain how you achieved the lovely blending of browns (lighter and darker) on the top of the external tank.
I have looked at the build thread on ARC but am still a little confused and would love to replicate this effect.
Many thanks.

Good job of picking up the foam close outs on the ET. And what we called the pencil sharpener area under the nose cone.

Thanks for all the nice words!  I appreciate it.

tetrox - For the ET I used a 50/50 mixture of Polly Scale SP Daylight Orange and Rust and then added some Reefer White for the base color.  For the darker brown areas at the top of the tank I taped off 2 areas around the top and applied a light misting of the straight Rust color using my airbrush.  I only sprayed a light mist so the base color still showed through.  After that was done I pulled off all the tape and then misted the same Rust color over the line created by the tape to blend it in.  I applied the paint in light mists.  I hope this makes sense.  I attached a picture that shows it a bit more clearly.

Mike.

It really is a beautiful build and credit to you.

This is beautiful!!  I love the extra detail you have added on the MLP!  Did you print your own tile decals?

Thanks guys!

Ronpur50 - I scanned a set of Cutting Edge tile decals and made a couple of quick changes(i.e. - lowered  the brightness, saturation...)  I had them printed on a Laser printer on white decal paper.  The tile decals on the top areas of the nose, tail, wings... were sprayed with some thinned Interior black so a hint of the tiles can be seen.  Although it's really hard to see that in pictures.  I applied pastel chalk to the bottom tiles to give them a more weathered appearance and they are sealed with Testors Acryl flat clear.
