JULY SPACE STATION SPACEWALKS TO BE PREVIEWED AND BROADCAST ON NASA TV

WASHINGTON -- Two Expedition 36 astronauts will venture outside the
International Space Station twice in July on spacewalks to prepare
for a new Russian module and perform additional installations on the
station's backbone.

NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston will host a NASA Television
briefing to preview the spacewalks at 2 p.m. EDT Tuesday, July 2.
Reporters may attend the briefing at Johnson and other participating
NASA centers, or ask questions by calling Johnson's newsroom at
281-483-5111 no later than 1:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Briefers will include:

-- David Korth, NASA spacewalk flight director
-- Ernest Bell, Spacewalk 22 spacewalk officer
-- Karina Eversley, Spacewalk 23 spacewalk officer

Flight Engineers Chris Cassidy of NASA and Luca Parmitano of the
European Space Agency will conduct the spacewalks July 9 and July 16
from the station's Quest airlock. Each spacewalk is scheduled to last
6 1/2 hours. Cassidy and Parmitano will replace a space-to-ground
communications receiver and wireless video equipment and install
power and cables for a Russian multipurpose laboratory module that
will be launched later this year. The new module will serve as a
research facility, docking port and airlock for future Russian
spacewalks and will replace the Pirs module.

Cassidy, who is designated EV1 for the spacewalks, will wear a U.S.
extravehicular mobility suit bearing red stripes. The spacewalks will
be the fifth and sixth of Cassidy's career. Parmitano, who is
designated EV2, will wear a spacesuit with no stripes and will be
making the first two spacewalks of his career. He will become the
first Italian astronaut to walk in space. Both spacewalkers will wear
helmet cameras to provide up close views of their work.

NASA TV coverage of the spacewalks will begin at 7 a.m. on both July 9
and July 16. Both spacewalks are scheduled to begin at 8:10 a.m.

NASA Astronaut Tom Marshburn Discusses Spaceflight at Newseum During Live Spacewalk

WASHINGTON -- NASA is inviting news media representatives to a discussion with astronaut Tom Marshburn from 8:00-9:30 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, July 16 at the Newseum in Washington.

Marshburn will appear in person to answer Newseum visitors' questions while astronauts Chris Cassidy of NASA and Luca Parmitano of the European Space Agency are conducting a planned 6 1/2-hour spacewalk outside the International Space Station in Earth orbit. Gene Policinski, chief operating officer of the Newseum Institute, will moderate the program.

Cassidy and Parmitano will venture outside the station's Quest airlock for assembly and maintenance work, as well as preparations for a new Russian module. The spacewalk begins at 8:10 a.m. and will be broadcast live on the Newseum's atrium screen.

Marshburn is the latest astronaut to perform a spacewalk and return to Earth. He has spent more than 24 hours on spacewalks, including 5 1/2 hours in May to fix an ammonia leak outside the space station. His first spaceflight was aboard space shuttle Endeavour during its space station assembly mission in July 2009. Marshburn returned to the space station as a flight engineer of Expeditions 34 and 35 from December to May.

Reporters interested in attending the event should contact Jonathan Thompson at 202-292-6353 or [email protected] by noon on Monday, July 15. The Newseum is located at 555 Pennsylvania Ave. NW in Washington. Media check-in will be located at the museum's group entrance on C Street NW.

When the Newseum opens to the public at 9 a.m., visitors with regular paid admission will be admitted to the final portion of the program. Seating is on a space-available basis.

What's in the general "Get Ahead" Bucket that might be added at the end of this EVA?

I hope one of them is "take a lot of photos" :-)

Great work already guys.

Pete has an article coming, which will go on after they leave Quest.

I'll aim to put in a stint to give Dappa a break midway through, but I want everyone to chip in and not treat this as read only. It's ball breaking to sit down and cover a six hour EVA, so combined we'll have good coverage.
