Looking back at SpX-1, it was two hours from capture to berthing

Riiight ... So much for my plan to wake up one hour prior to capture and watch the last 100 or so meters. I woke up, checked in here, and the LEE was driving to capture Dragon ... Then the Ustream feed wouldn't come up in time ... :/

So, as consolation, let me document here what happened, compared to the estimates from yesterday.  Our best guess on Sunday evening as to the approach timeline was based on the CRS-1 approach plan, since that was the best we had.  (Martin/MP99, you claimed overnight that it was in the press kit; it is not)

From Sunday evening:

Here is my rough estimate for approach and berthing timeline.
4:41am ET = 250 meter (820 foot) departure
5:49am ET =  30 meter (100 foot) departure
6:07am ET = Capture point arrival
6:31am ET = Capture (announced plan)
Times are obviously rough estimates.  I just needed to know what time to set my alarm clock for.

I just now went through the thread and gathered the actual times:

4:06am ET = 250 meter (820 foot) departure
(35 minutes earlier than my estimated plan above)
5:06am ET =  30 meter (100 foot) departure
(43 minutes earlier than my estimated plan above)
5:22am ET = Capture point arrival
(45 minutes earlier than my estimated plan above)
5:31am ET = Capture
(60 minutes earlier than announced plan yesterday)

So, now we know that when NASA announces an estimated capture time for the next day, there is at least a full hour of wiggle room in that.  Obviously they might run behind the timeline due to issues, and I expected they might run a little ahead, but not a full hour.  Contrast with the shuttle days, where they'd be nowhere near this early, rather just staying right on the timeline.

EDIT:  Jim points out that this was an off-nominal mission; if nominal they would not have run early; fair enough, we'll see.

Not complaining, just documenting it for the future.  Congratulations SpaceX!

Sorry, you're right - lists the events but not the times.

cheers, Martin

Wrong conclusion.  Because of delay and replanning, that is the reason for the time difference.  This would not be applicable on a nominal mission

Anyone know why robot arm engineers in Houston and in Saint-Hubert, Quebec, are doing the remote control installation of the Dragon capsule on the space station instead of the astronauts at the ISS?  Is this a demonstration of increased capabilities?  Or a plan for future ISS operations? Just curious...

‏@SpaceX
Dragon now targeted to berth w/ISS in the next 2-3 hrs.

(Depends how long they want to stay in pre-berth, otherwise it'll be a lot sooner than that.
