Once again strange news... are we talking about a satellite launch or the test of a rocket that will launch the satellite?

Some news agencies are announcing the launch of the Omid satellite but IRNA is announcing the launch of the Safir satellite-carrier rocket. See Ministry confirms Safir satellite-carrier rocket launch.

Congrats to the successful launch. With this orbital launch, Iran has only become the 10th nation/space organisation after the Soviet Union (Russia), US, France, Japan, China, the UK, ESA, India and Israel to successfully launch an orbital rocket.

Does we have any confirmation that there is a satellite in orbit from this launch?

Euronews is reporting "the second test launch of the carrier rocket that will eventually loft Iran's first satellite". However, I think they also stated after the last launch was an orbital one, so I don't know the reliability of their info (or any Western info, for that matter)

They also said (and there are photos that seem to confirm this in the previous link to the gallery) Ahmadineyad performed the countdown that led to the launch... hopefully with a little more precision than the last one ;)

No satellite in orbit yet....but IRINN reports that a small lightweight comms sat "Hope" will be launched before the end of next week.

I believe "Hope" is about half a metre cube in size and was revealed earlier in the year at the opening of the new launch complex.

Todays launch was of the satellite "carrier" .

Some reports are now suggesting that the launch was orbital, but carried a demonstration payload.

Since when are booster test flights -- requiring detailed imagery to detect anomalies -- conducted in the dark? With the chief of state in attendance? I'm suspicious of all 'certainties' on this mysterious shot.

The Explorer 1 launch was at night, as were the Jupiter-C suborbital reentry test launches before them.  I think it was for tracking purposes, hot engines and reentry vehicles being easier to track at night than during daylight.

Somebody should do some media searching and figure out how many times they have claimed to have launched something when they have not, or claimed to be about to launch something and then have not.

The Iranians have a tendency to exaggerate their rocket and space plans and achievements.  It would be useful to compare this event to their past pattern.

As Jonathan McDowell has pointed out in another forum, we are battling with Iranian journalists who are not used to the exact terminology which we like in space-related announcements and who are not in the least familiar with spaceflight issues in general, and also bad translations into English.

I am awaiting some definitive translations of authoritative Iranian statements before passing judgement.

It´s possible that the satellite has broken after launch and oficial information was changed to test payload.

Regardless, the object would be tracked, however most Western reports are talking about a rocket test, not a satellite. I also find John's videos (which apparently come from an Arab channel) to be pretty conclusive in this regard.

IRINN reported this morning that Iran plans to put four (more) satellites in orbit by 2010
The launch is still headline news and was discussed at length during breakfast ( UTC ) programming

Having said that there still seems to be confusion over when the next launch will be .

AFAIK nothing has appeared on SpaceTrack yet  relating to yesterdays events.

Could you give the video link?
