I slept right through it but I was up reading updates half the night.

This forum goes crazy during these launches.

Good to see Falcon 9 in flight with the rocketcam.  :)
spectre9, still think that'll be the only flight from SpaceX  this year?

No major anomalies this time, folks.  Go CRS-2/SpX-2!

Sigh......

One thing is sure however, every SpaceX launch is far more attractive than >95% of TV dramas out there!

I'd say 100%.  And the vast majority of people have no idea at all that this is happening.

Thanks to seeking updates on this site, I knew what was going on today more than anyone else I encountered.  During a couple of breaks at work, I listened to the local news radio station, and they never mentioned it at all.

Cool stuff.

And I agree. I didn't even think of putting on the TV at any point today. This was a lot more interesting. Real life space drama, live.

Oh and 350,000 page impressions since 10am UTC today. Even our first server fault for the first time since STS-129's - I think - launch back before we went to the super duper new L2 subscriptions-funded servers at Softlayer in Dallas.

Wasn't the bandwidth (if I'm correct on the terminology) - we were busier later in the day - it was the spike of people running on to the site at the same time the second SpaceX's webcast ended with the anomaly reference and then everyone mashing refresh for info. Resulted in a freeze.

We'd have coped if this was just a news site, but the forum is a different beast and after a few mins of panic I remembered I could log into the host in Dallas and do admin reboot. Worked, we came back on and was fine since.

Today was the first time I saw something properly compete with - and, in some elements, beat - Shuttle on here. Even MSL was lower. That's pretty amazing, considering this isn't HSF, it's not a debut launch, and the anomaly wasn't a rocket blowing up.

Maybe there's something in this commercial space stuff! ;)

Ok, I'm rambling now, but you know what makes me chuckle to myself? I started this site in 2005, with two NASA guys (well, one was USA) promising to give us an edge (they are both still here) and for the first week we had about six others members mulling around, mainly defectors from space.com's fast-disolving forum. I envisioned we'd grow, but be very niche, hardcore engineering, covering Shuttle, but via planning and processing, not just the actual missions, etc.

Never imagined we'd end up with this big site, where tons of people turn up day and night. Just watching the servers after the freeze, and seeing IP addresses hitting the site, flowing down the page like something out of the Matrix, was a bit humbling!

Anyhoo, I'll shut up now. Love you all, in a manly way ;)

The sad part is that if it had been LOV then it would have been all over the front pages. Got to love the priorities that MOST of the media has...

If it bleeds it leads. Their priorities are set by shareholders, whose priorities are set by ratings, which I'm sorry to say is a reflection on we the people. Long-term, success is still more valuable... just not to the five o'clock news.

OK, this is probably off-topic even for a party thread, but I got a British 10 pence coin in change yesterday.  It's exactly the same size and color as a US quarter.

It's not unusual to get Canadian coins, but I don't remember ever getting a British coin before.  I only mention it because of all the Brits on this site.  :)

Wow, that's leftfield :D

When in the US I find it very baffling how all the dollar notes are the same bloody color! I have to actually look at the number on the note! ;D

British notes:

But here's what you need, the biggest one on the bottom right is a two pound coin (about 3 bucks).

Does this digression mean I can start uploading my favorite York City goals? ;D
Sure if you want too once I move house back to London this summer for the first time since I was 12 so I that I can attend grad school starting in the fall.  ;)

Lol... But Kerbal Space Program is indeed awesome. So much fun for an armchair wannabe rocket/spacecraft designer. :)

According to a Reddit AMA (ask me anything) with SpaceX software guys, SpaceX uses Kerbal:

Redittor: "First question: do any of you guys play Kerbal Space Program?"
SpaceX: "Are you kidding? That’s how we design our rockets!"

Liarzz!!1!!eleven!! I knows for a fact they usez Linux, and Kerbal no talky Linux. :)

Runs under a KVM or a VMWare XP image or the like?

Well I got to go on break and watch the launch live on my smartphone.  Great rocketcam video.  And super job on getting the thrusters fixed.

When they (or Boeing CST, or Dreamchaser, or whoever) put astronauts/pilots on that thing and start flying Americans from the Cape (or Vandy, or Wallops?) again I'll do cartwheels like a cheerleader.  :)

(Or try to do cartwheels.  And log on to NSF.com from my hospital bed.  I'm not exactly Mr. Limber/Petite.  More like Mr. Big Fat Clumsy Oaf).

Anyway here's a virtual celebratory jump tonight!

I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

Congrats to SpaceX, great to have a successful flight.

Totally enjoyed the side track about ten pence coins.

Party on Wayne Elon.
