Does "re-selling" work for commercial space?
« on: 12/18/2012 03:29 pm »
The best example of re-selling is what Space Adventures does - they market space tourism services provided by RSC Energia, with a track record of making sales.

The question is are there other examples of successful re-selling?

The reason I ask is that it is very common for space companies you have never heard of to announce re-selling deals with other companies you have never heard of. I am just wondering if these deals ever amount to anything.

Maybe ULA could be considered a "re-seller", but I wouldn't count their government sales as being commercial.

No, Boeing Launch Services and LM Commercial Launch Services are the resellers.  They buy from ULA.

You mean like Constellation Services International Lunar ExpressSM System?  ;)

Looks to me you guys were both a little behind and a little ahead of the times. Behind the times in that you were post dot.com bubble, yet ahead of the times in that you were pre-SpaceX.

We'll see how Golden Spike does with its attempt at reselling. They could have picked better economic times, that's for sure, but the technology to make it happen is lining up nicely IMO....

I'm not confident in this answer, but I seem to recall that some of the little secondaries on SpaceX flights are sold and organized through one or more "re-sellers".

Since CSI actually invented the Lunar Express architecture, technically it was not a reselling venture at all. Re-selling is when you try to market someone else's hardware or IP.

And CSI was not actually trying to sell Lunar Express as a commercial venture, at the time, it was simply to promote the idea that access to the Moon was a lot cheaper than was generally considered at the time.
