Certainly we never got to this point in the launch.
It's Tony De La Rosa, ...I don't create this stuff, I just report it.

And I am sure Ed. will be commenting on how many are using russian engines ;) This will make three launches for the week?
Not only that, but they are all from the same engine family by the same company. NPO Energomash is becoming the world standard, at least this week!

Ed Kyle

First stage engine failure, so much for world standard...

"Wrong direction of flight" is not "engine failure". Just sayin'.

This would mean a deliberate engine cutoff - correct?

Translation or idiom?

Did the engine even cut off? From the lagging webcast, I saw the rocket seemingly flying at a, um, more horizontal angle than normal at ~T+30s, and I was thinking if the guidance went all wrong.

Sounds like the infamous Chinese launch failure in 1996 - and both involving Intelsat satellites. Luckily it doesn't seems to be flying towards the command ship.......

There is a really big difference here. It could've hit the tower on the way out like so:

What fuel does it use? Is it toxic?

Were you near the launch site (somehow)? Or is it a screen cap?

I, too, thought it looked a little off-nominal early on, but didn't think anything more of it until now...

Is there a flight termination system or would the engine just be shut down if off course because there was little risk of hitting anything in the middle of the Pacific?

Anik posted in sea launch schedule thread that there are plans to shift some launches from Proton-M to Zenit-3SL this year. Wonder what would happen to these plans now... :'(
