Captain James T. Kirk was from Iowa.
Captain James T. Kirk WILL BE from Iowa.  :-)
What kind of wastrels would dump a perfectly good booster in the ocean after just one use?

Maybe that was the "late load" demonstration? Apples and ice-cream?
Well, I cannot think up better test cargo for late load demonstration test than some cheap perishables. Edible, even.

Yes, I bet only folks on ISS had surprise.
Be successful.  Then tell the haters to (BLEEP) off. - deruch

How dare they!  Those apples weren't on the official manifest!   VERY unprofessional!  ;)

Wait and see if it happens again.

It has happened before and it will happen again. Lots of times. You should know that.

Next flight: blind squirrels, nuts, and Kool-Aid!  ;)

When is the next flight?

Are you implying you have evidence that NASA is going to kill SpaceX's COTS contract because of a couple apples?

I have such mixed feelings about this issue.

On one hand I totally see Jim's point that spaceflight (especially human spaceflight) is still new, its still dangerous, and should be treated with the utmost seriousness. Bad things tend to happen when you loosen restrictions that have been put in place for a damned good reason. I understand that sending an apple or a picture up is not going to make that much difference one way or the other, but does change the culture slightly that maybe enough to push over into the "bad" place.

On the other hand, it is exactly this sort of stiff shirt collar mentality that makes human spaceflight so boring to the average person that the whole human spaceflight is steadily losing support from the population. All you have to do is take a look at the popularity of "Mohawk guy", or the sheer excitement of the SpaceX team during launch and see how even just a little loosening of the tie can bring in a whole new generation of human spaceflight enthusiast (in other words young people) and how that will only be beneficial to the whole endeavor.

Both sides are making good points, but they seem to be talking past each other and not to each other.

I think you want this:

Ugly Sculpture

Code is <img src="...location..." alt="...Title..." />

And yes I think the kool-aid in the party thread has expired if someone came up with that ;)

Well, SpaceX still has another 48 hours to deliver the early return cargo...but I don't think it's going way out on a limb to say congratulations SpaceX and NASA, job well done!

Congratulations, SpaceX!

I took a nap, slept through the alarm, and missed the landing, but I'm glad to see that it went OK.

Dragon, another fine product from The Republic of California.

(Like the Space Shuttle.)

Started off in a dramatic fashion for Falcon and ended up in a picture perfect landing. Dragon is a solid ride, well done!
