Detailing the plans for establishing an Indian space station, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S Somanath said on Friday that the target is to launch the first module for the space station by 2028 and that ISRO is developing a launch vehicle to carry heavier loads to have the space station ready by 2035.

“By 2028, we will launch the first module, that is the target. In another seven years, that is by 2035, we will build further modules and make the space station fully operational. This is because, for 2028 launch (of the first module) we do not have a powerful rocket, we have a rocket called LVM-3, which can only take 10 tonne, so the first module will be an eight-tonne mass module, which we will launch by 2028.”
“Future modules will be bigger, 20 to 25 tonnes… they cannot be launched in the current rocket, so we are developing a new rocket. We will seek approval for it and it will take about seven years to develop it. By that time, we can launch the heavier modules and make it operational so that human beings can go (to the space station). The 2028 launch will be a robotic module, a satellite, where we can dock, conduct experiments and come back. A human being going (to the space station) can happen only after 2035. This is the plan as of today,” he added.

“One is connecting academia with industry, it is very very important and I think today the connect is still very weak… (Publishing in journals) is not enough. The research that you do in universities and institutions should go to industries, it should be used for product innovation, it should go to markets immediately, it should generate revenue and that revenue should feed into further research. I think this is a chain we have to create in every domain…,” he said.
“The focus on New Education Policy is to build that capability… I think the government is very much focused today to convert knowledge creation into wealth creation and this is the essence of the science policy being looked at today,” he added.

Ahmedabad: The Indian Space Research Organization (Isro) plans to launch India’s first international space station (ISS) by 2028 and a fully operational and manned ISS by 2035, said its chairman, S Somanath, in Ahmedabad on Friday.
Speaking at the Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan organized by Vigyan Bharti at Science City, Somanath said, “In another five years, we will launch our first module of the ISS.
The first module will weigh 8 tonnes and will be robotic. Right now, our rocket can take only 10 tonnes.”
He added, “We are developing a new rocket that will be able to carry a load of 20 to 1,215 tonnes. By 2035, we should be able to send an ISS into space with human beings.”
Commenting on the Aditya L-1 mission to study the solar atmosphere, Somanath said, “Aditya will reach the L-1 point on January 6. Everyone will be able to watch the video of Aditya entering the L-1 point.”
He said, “In the amrit kaal of our country, the next 25 years, we are going to build our space station. Many years later, we will go to Mars, the moon, and Venus.”
Speaking on the importance of becoming a technologically strong country, Somanath said, “The Chandrayan-3 was not only a technologically significant event, but we have done it at a lower cost than the world could ever do. This is a characteristic of this country: if you have the mind and confidence to do something, then we can continue to remain a leader.

Says that two uncrewed missions in 2024 are GX and G1, if I heard correctly. There is another uncrewed mission in 2025, presumable G2. There will also be crew escape test missions, but its a bit confusing as to how many from what he said. Could be one, two or three!

@isro, which is gearing up for at least 1 #Gaganyaan uncrewed mission this yr — initial target is before June — could carry out the first one independent of the planned abort tests on the spl test vehicle, the 1st of which was done in Oct 2023. 1/n
S Somanath, chairman, Isro, said: “We’re working on both — the first uncrewed mission and the second abort test on the test vehicle (TV-D2)... 2/n
…Depending on the readiness, we will decide which one is to be launched first,” indicating that the first uncrewed mission could even happen before the TV-D2. 3/n
He said the abort missions are only a prerequisite for the crewed mission and not the uncrewed ones and added that the first uncrewed mission will not carry the service module while Isro is targetting to send #Vyomitra. 4/n
“We will finalise on whether Vyomitra will go as part of the first one at a later stage. We’ll need to carry out a minimum of two successful uncrewed missions before the final configuration… 5/n
…and we should be able to launch at least one this year. The initial target is for the first half of 2024,” Somanath said. 6/n
The uncrewed missions are precursors that will test various technologies ahead of the crewed Gaganyaan mission which will demonstrate human spaceflight to Low Earth Orbit (LEO). 7/n

Why is ISRO pursing human spaceflight when it cannot even launch it's own communication satellites? GSAT-20 is going to USA for launch even though LVM3 is perfectly capable of placing it in the GTO orbit. Seems like misplaced priorities to me.

Two articles in THE TIMES OF INDIA state that Prime Minister Modi will reveal the names of India's four astronauts tomorrow (three are published in the paper with a fourth somewhat garbled) during a visit to the space center.
The senior astronaut has reportedly been named commander of the Gaganyaan mission.
One of the four will be named as crew member for a commercial ISS mission, likely through Axiom.
