Superstar NASA PAO Josh Byerly was involved, so you know this is going to be good, but this is frakking epic!

Excellent footage, but what a script!! :o

Hope NASA isn't planning on owning them on the "talk instead of walk" front, too. ;)

That is really cool. Reminds me of some of the videos done by the autotuned-Sagan dude who was making a point that NASA is really bad at self-promotion... I guess NASA listened!

I guess i'll be kicked off from the forum now for saying : i didn't particularly like this, as it's very cliche ( besides the problems with the truthfulness of the message )

Everything is a cliche, but what make the difference is the timing of who and how is telling it.

I can't kick people off for being miserable! ;D

Edit: Sorry, that's my sense of humor. What I mean is it's not complusary to be all "wowzers, what a video". All views welcome, positive or negative, as much as I personally find negativity for the sake of negativity to be one of the problems for space flight these days.

   Good video!

It reminds me of space promos from days gone by.
It almost has that President John F. Kennedy feel to its narrative.

Oh! For that cynical naysayer, I say?
Would you love to journey to space to see and experience for yourself?
Would you grab a seat on SS2, if it were offered you?
It's too bad that this website disallows advertizing to raise funds to
allow for a contest/draw for a ticket for a Virgin Galactic seat for some lucky person registered here..
There might be enough registered users on this website to make it possible...maybe.

Ooops! Sorry, off topic.

Back on topic:

Since the video narrative nicely explained the philosophy of the
urge or need for space travel, but was short in some areas, I'll try to fill in with this pseudo-narration:

"We continue to strive, whether Russian, American, Chinese, European
or Japanese.
We strive and hunger to go beyond low orbit.
We strive and hunger and yearn to go beyond the Moon.
We desire and crave the hitherto hidden knowledge of what lies beyond the farthest probe we have sent.
We dig and sift, like prospectors of old, to search out the benefits of this journey through and into the nearby cosmos and beyond.
While we know some nations will falter, some will flag; yet we see others who pick up the faltering torch, raise it high,  and carry on admirably and with resolve.

And while we see bold enterprises and firms of commerce try their hand at this pioneering extension of humanity, we do not despise those in offices of governance who have already bestowed great finances and effort to achieve that form of space travel that has already been achieved.
Sadly we know some firms of commerce will shut their gates, having drained their coffers, discharging their earnest laborers, when their dreams fail to transform into metal and fire; yet others carry on, carry on...Ad Astra per Aspera."

Great video, but if it was shown during a commercial break on the evening news (as a public service announcement) it would have more effect. Here it is just preaching to the converted…

As a non-technical type, just a space fan (who chanced upon this group a few months back), I have to guess that the vast majority of folks don't have a clue about what's going on when it comes to space.  I didn't.   Thanks to this site, I'm just about "up to speed," at least in awareness.

Yes, NASA needs to do some advertising and ramp up the public interest.  A common misconception out there is that the U.S. space program is over. Between a generally unaware public, and an equally unaware Congress, they have their work cut out.  The only way to get the funding back where it needs to be, or even to prevent furthur cuts, is for this to happen.

This video is a good example of what can be done.  How to get this video and others like it out in front of the public, well that's going to take a different kind of expert.

One thing I've noticed-- on the commercial side SpaceX has quite a bit of public interest stuff flowing out from their operation, and Sierra Nevada is beginning to ramp up their public relations effort as well.  The others, not so much.  I base this again from my point of view.  When I do a google search and go to their websites, these two are the ones that jump out there with stuff to engage the public.

NASA of course has a public relations staff and a huge website as well, but results seem to indicate that at the least, a little criticism in this regard is justified.  They have the bigger burden to bear--they have to get their own funding as well as parse out dollars to the companies competing for the commercial LEO effort.
