The ISS program is going to miss the ATVs later this decade, I tell you.
Respectfully Pete, but I disagree. NASA and the ISS partners have known for at least six years now that ATV is going away after ATV-5. They have had plenty of time to get alternatives up-and-flying. And they have.
Fuel transfer capabilities, DAM capabilities and reboost capabilities with ATV are basically redundant to what has been done with Progress for ages.
I tell you, HTV will be much more sorely missed than ATV, once it stops flying.

I was told that MCC-M does not give GO to open ATV-4 hatch. Reasons are unknown for now. There are not technical problems on ATV-4 side.

On this morning's NASA TV ISS coverage, it was just stated that hatch opening was delayed due to the possible contamination of cargo bags with mold or bacteria.

During the ISS daily program, PAO announced there was mold/other contamination of 3 cargo bags and ground teams are determining whether cleaning/decontamination of the bags in ATV-4 is required before the hatch can be opened.

This contamination issue is discussed in item 7 "Bag Cleaning" of "ATV ground/crew discussion" which is on the ISS - ATV-4 L2 thread.

ATV hatch opening delayedhttp://blogs.esa.int/atv/2013/06/17/atv-hatch-opening-delayed/ Mission manager Alberto Novelli sent us this news on the hatch opening: ATV status is good. However this morning the hatch opening had to be postponed due to ongoing discussions between Russia and NASA on the exact content of the initial crew ingress operations. The re-planning of the hatch opening is ongoing and should be performed within few days.

A few questions come to mind about this situation...
With the almost surgical ward/paranoid processing of space bound hardware, how did the bags get contaminated and why were they allowed to launched in that condition?
The "NASA and Russia" discussions raises the question, again, about Russian interaction/interference with USOS vehicles, payloads, and crew members. And yes I fully acknowledge that the ATV is docked to the Russian segment and ISS is a partnership with a shared decision making process...

whether cleaning/decontamination of the bags in ATV-4 is required before the hatch can be opened.
Even if this seems to be unnecessary now: How would this be done in case it's required?

The crew has just been informed by TSUPP that no decision has been made by now.

A contamination event occurred on the previous ATV too - I wonder if there's some handling error by the ground teams at Kourou?
FYI, the full set of ATV docking photos are available on the Roscosmos website here:

http://www.nasa.gov/directorates/heo/reports/iss_reports/2013/ISS_Daily_Summary_Report__061713.html"ATV4 Operations: ATV4 successfully docked to the ISS on Saturday, June 15. Russian management expressed concerns with suspected microbial growth on some of the cargo bags in the vehicle and therefore hatch opening scheduled for today was delayed while the coordination on microbial remediation was determined. The current plan is to open the ATV hatch early in the crew morning on Tuesday and have the crew wipe the suspected bags with Fungistat prior to transferring to ISS"

How would they know of a potential contamination issue? Would there be clues in the ground handling reports from Kourou or do they have detectors in the ATV's cabin air filters that pick up high level of spores?

The hatch opened and the astronauts are into ATV.
