EXPEDITION 31/32 SPACE STATION CREW CONDUCTS BRIEFING, INTERVIEWS

HOUSTON -- Three crew members will discuss their upcoming Expedition
31 and 32 missions in a news conference at 1 p.m. CST Wednesday, Jan.
11, from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. NASA Television and
the agency's website will broadcast the briefing live.

NASA astronaut Joe Acaba and Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and
Sergei Revin are set to launch to the International Space Station
aboard the Soyuz TMA-04M spacecraft March 29 (March 30 local time in
Baikonur, Kazakhstan).

Following the news conference, interview opportunities are available
in person, by phone, through internet videoconferencing or via
satellite. The satellite interviews are scheduled for 3:30-4:30 p.m.

To reserve an interview opportunity, media representatives must
contact the Johnson newsroom at 281-483-5111 by 5 p.m. Monday, Jan.
9.

To participate in the news conference from a NASA center, U.S.
journalists must call the center's public affairs office by 5 p.m.
local time on Tuesday, Jan. 10. To participate in the briefing by
phone, media representatives must call the Johnson newsroom by 12:45
p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Priority will be given to journalists
participating in person; questions by phone will be taken as time
permits.

International journalists wishing to attend in person at Johnson must
contact the newsroom and submit the required paperwork for
credentials by 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6.

Acaba, Padalka and Revin are three of six crew members comprising
Expeditions 31 and 32. Aboard the station, they will join NASA
astronaut Don Pettit, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and European
Space Agency astronaut André Kuipers.

The NASA Live Interview Media Service (LIMS) that will be used for
satellite interviews following the news conference has moved to
KU-Band service. KU-Band parameters will be provided prior to the
event. NASA will schedule each LIMS event on a satellite in proximity
of AMC18 whenever possible.

Soyuz TMA-04M launch will be possibly delayed to the end of April - middle of May due to problems with leak tightness of descent module during test at RSC Energia. Soyuz TMA-05M launch will be possibly delayed to the middle of June.

Would this lead to a delay in the return of TMA-22?

Yes. I was told about possible April 28 launch date. So Soyuz TMA-22 landing can be delayed to April 14.

More problems... ::)

This may have a knock-on effect for the SpaceX C2/C3 mission too. :(

AFP: Russia 'to postpone next manned space launch'
http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5hHonNkSx76_s6cJApIH4XheVHeSA

"The source told Interfax that the Soyuz TMA-04M vessel had not withstood tests to its pressure chamber ahead of the planned mission on March 30 and the first flight would be postponed to mid-April or the first half of May.

"This re-entry capsule now cannot be used for manned spaceflight," the source said.

That mission would fly with the re-entry capsule that was due to go up on the next mission on May 30 and as a result that mission would also likely be postponed to the middle or end of June."

To put things in perspective: it has happened before, on several occassions, that the Soyuz descent module (and orbital modules) failed it's initial leak-checks in the vacuum chamber. No big deal. Modules will be fixed, or, as has happened in the past, be replaced by a spare example. Only downside to this is the delay in the flight.

And would you kindly explain why this would have a knock-on effect on C2/C3?

Sure - because C2/C3 is currently scheduled for late March/early April, with the potential to slip further, if we are now going to have crew rotations in April, then that could cause schedule conflicts between Soyuz and Dragon.

And yes, I am aware this has happened before. I remember a Descent Module needed to be changed out back in October 2010, IIRC.

Please change the date in the header of this topic to "TBD April/May".

The landing of Soyuz TMA-03M with André Kuipers could be postponed as well....

We have to wait until the Russians are releasing their new ISS launch schedule for possible new launch/landing dates.

I have changed it, but...

Soyuz TMA-03M with André Kuipers will also land later, it should land on June 16th in stead of May 16th

...who said this? It is not yet decided about specific launch and landing dates.

Yes, it was spacecraft n°230 (Soyuz TMA-20), in october 2010.
It already happened in 1989, with spacecraft n°59 (Soyuz TM-9).

Yes, but there was PAO, not SA.

Some interesting comments from chief of piloted programs Alexei Krasnov via ITAR-TASS:

"The malfunction was found in the service elements of the descent capsule....but no decision was taken to delay a forthcoming launch.

Krasnov acknowledged that several days ago some problems really emerged....but the problems are related to a service element, rather than the descent capsule,

Krasnov did not rule out that “the schedule of piloted missions will be revised,” but he sees no tragedy in this. “There are program reserves to deal with the emerged problem,” he underlined.

“It is very good that upon the results of the tests we received critical remarks before the spaceship was brought to the Baikonur spaceport, because we have some time and possibilities to examine everything in detail,” Krasnov concluded.

Concur. The shift in landing date for Andre Kuipers is pure speculation at this point.

I've changed my last post, the speculative date(s) are now removed and I will post no more date(s) until the Russians/NASA are releasing a new ISS launch/landing schedule.

There is NEVER a downside with preserving human life.
Remember Soyuz 1?

If you're not old enough to remember, I'll point out that Soviet authorities took short cuts, forced their space agency to rush
the Soyuz 1 mission, the result being the tragic demise of  Kamarov.

I'm GLAD this mission is justifiably delayed.
