Too many CCDev contenders?
« on: 12/21/2011 07:48 pm »
If this "secret team" behind the commercial shuttle extension succeeds in their new effort for a next-gen SD vehicle, this would widen the play field of contenders competing for CCDev funds. This would come at a time when CCDev funding by Congress for this fiscal year appropriated nearly half the requested amount.

I have to ask. Is there room for another contender? Is there even room for all existing contenders?

Always.  And may the best ideas prevail (rather than politics or unfounded bias).

Not necessarily, the initiative was independent of NASA business including ISS crew rotation.  They may or may not try to compete for ISS crew rotation, but the emphasis right now is reconstituting lost shuttle capabilities, and STS could not satisfy the requirements now required for Commercial crew for ISS.

That being said, yes there is a glut in capacity of CCDev partners right now.  There will be a deselect, and there will probably only be 2, or 3 max providers of crew services for ISS.  Not all CCDev recipients will go on to provide crew services.

Yeah, I don't think the next gen shuttle is looking for ccdev (or whatev) funds. Not now, at least.

No,
1. They will be too late to compete.   It is going to be many years before the vehicle is operational
2.They are not able to receive CCDev funds
3.  There is no more CCDev, the programs has move to next level and is looking for an integrated design.

Why couldn't this question be asked on an existing thread, instead of starting a new one?

Too many CCDev threads.  Is there room for another?
Will PeterAlt start another thread every time he has a question?

I didn't mean just CCDev funds. I meant also including commercial service and the human space flight market in general. Is there room in that market for yet another provider?

That is a question for time and the market to solve.
