Stratolaunch airplane nears first flight

Quote
The latest taxi test of the giant aircraft being developed by Stratolaunch for its air-launch system is a sign the plane’s first flight may take place soon.

The company announced Jan. 9 that its airplane, the largest in the world by wingspan, performed its fastest taxi test to date at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California, reaching a top speed of 219 kilometers per hour. That test also featured a “rotation authority maneuver” that briefly lifted the plane’s nose gear off the ground.

This was the latest in a series of taxi tests, where the airplane goes down the runway under its own power but does not take off. That test program started in late 2017, with subsequent tests at increasing speeds.

Watch the Stratolaunch aircraft reach a top speed of 136 mph during the test.

It's Tony De La Rosa, ...I don't create this stuff, I just report it.

It keeps getting larger and larger velocity values as they use smaller and smaller units.
110 knots
136 mph
219 kph
340262 Furlongs per fortnight?
Looking forward to some vertical velocity
What kind of wastrels would dump a perfectly good booster in the ocean after just one use?

There current big issue is that the diversion site is currently not a nice dry lake bed due to rain.

Stratolaunch space venture sharply scales back its operations, months after Paul Allen’s death

Well that didn't last long. So much for the rapid engine progress they were showing. (although only part of an engine)

But if the funding goes away and there aren't any customers? Who's going to actually use this thing? This whole project seems dead, before the plane has even flown.  :(

Shame :( I have always been skeptical of the concept. The SSTO RLV project looked cool on paper and gave me some hope. With that gone, I give them 3 more years, at most. Quite sad :(

Yeah, sort of makes me wonder why they even bothered pretending that they were continuing with development for as long as they did.

For the sake of not seeing wasted effort, hopefully another air launch based company can merge with them to develop a medium lift launcher or point to point transport.

Disgusting that family members would so quickly kill off a life long dream and years of effort after taking control of Paul's estate.

Unfortunately Jody doesn't share Paul's passion for space.

Stratolauncher is looking more like a modern Spruce Goose.

Here's hoping Bezos and Musk have better succession plans. Both have better companies. Blue just need to start earning money from NS flying passengers and for NG to be complete to stand chance of surviving without large cash injections.
SpaceX may find BFR shelved with them concentrating on profitable F9.

I think that with a rebranding, they can stick around. New name:Stratolift, and will basically be a giant cargo aircraft.

Not the glorious future they wanted,  but really has always been the most likely outcome.

On one hand, I'm sad to see what seemed like a real passion project scaled down that quickly. On the other hand, I'm still skeptical of air-launching a two- to four-stage small rocket. If you're going to throw away that much hardware, what does the plane do that couldn't be accomplished by a slight tank stretch and a minimal launch pad? It might well be that the project was carried by Paul Allen but doesn't appear competitive against reusables and simple two-stage rockets off dirt pads.
Which booster has the most soot? SpaceX booster launch history! (discussion)

Both Bezos & Elon are relatively young men to be talking about succession plans.

Bezos is 10 years and Elon Musk is 18 years Paul Allen's junior. Bezos is a year younger than Steve Jobs when he died. Musk is 9 years younger. Unfortunately, stress kills.

Jobs died because of new age mysticism, not stress. He refused effective treatment until it was too late.
You want to be inspired by things. You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is going to be great. That's what being a spacefaring civilization is all about. It's about believing in the future and believing the future will be better than the past. And I can't think of anything more exciting than being out there among the stars.
