Gotcha, Yeah I figured lighting would change but was hoping they would try and blend the beams a bit, so excited to hear they are. Thank you so much, and great article you just posted to about today's activities.

Man, she looks great from above. Just as if she was coming home on the HAC, rolling to the left. Can't wait for this exhibit to open.

Thats one question I have been asking, to me if you can get right to the edge of the upper floor (I know they will have glass barrier or something there) but what keeps people from throwing things on her wing, I mean its literally right there!!
All the other people there that would beat them to a pulp if they did.
It's no different at Udvar Hazy. It would be easy to toss stuff on the wings. But no one does.

There was another hatch that goes from the crew module to the external airlock -- if that's open or no longer installed, then maybe it's plausible; if that's there and it's closed and locked, I don't think you're getting much farther than the faux airlock.
Based on photos prior to final hatch closure in the OPF, I believe the hatch in question is removed (likely to save weight).
When we were allowed in for the media opportunity, they explained that there was a faux airlock in place, not the real one, that was going to stay for the exhibit, however there would be no entrance back to the cabin (as Robert pointed out). Here's a shot looking back at what would be the payload bay, if the airlock was there.

Shuttle Atlantis Unwrapped & Revealed at Kennedy Visitor Center
Published on Apr 26, 2013
Protective shrink-wrap encasing space shuttle Atlantis was removed today revealing the iconic orbiter in its new home at NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida. Shortly after Atlantis moved to the Visitor Complex from Kennedy in November 2012, the covering was installed to protect the vehicle during construction of the "Space Shuttle Atlantis" exhibit. Within the next few weeks, the payload bay doors are set to be opened and the robotic arm installed to showcase Atlantis as if it were flying in space. The grand opening of "Space Shuttle Atlantis" is set for June 29.

Interesting. All of the spectators are wearing hard hats, but 4 of the 5 people in the lifts are not.

I was inside on the last press day before they closed Atlantis up to move her out of the OPF for the last time and got the see the interior arangementsand ask the USA techs about them. The mockup ODS does not have any real "hatches", just a fabric cover that is velcroed on over the opening to the payload bay and the port side of the "floor" was built with the 43 deg angle so you could stand on it. The interior hatch was removed since the hinge mechanism couldn't support the open hatch at that angle. The yellow scafolding lets you stand in the mid deck and access a ladder that leads up thru the starboard side interdeck access to the flight deck. Up there, you would have to brace yourself against the side pannels on the port side, but everything that could be damaged (like the sky genie pouches) was removed. The whole arrangement is to alllow maintenace and inspection on the flight deck. Apparently there will be functioning lights up there to allow people to see the inside from the balcony.

That may have been the plan at some point, but according to Tim Macy, director of project development and construction for the exhibit, there will be no lights inside Atlantis as a result of the fire suppression requirements that come along with adding any type of lighting inside the orbiter.

Man, it looks amazing. All that is missing is the big movie screen showing a pilot's view of Atlantis landing.

It would compliment the angle of Atlantis as if she is in her final turn to line up with the runway.
I plan to see OV-104 in person later this year. I'll get plenty of photos of her in the new exhibit. Mainly for my own use as an artist to draw her.

She does look like there is a coat of dust on her even though the wrap was on, is that just the lighting or did some construction dust manage to get under there, and if so how will they wipe Atlantis down?

That's not dust, that its post-flight appearance. But they will be gently wiping down the orbiter before opening less any dust settles between now and June 29.

I think it's decided, no one will get to complain that KSC received an orbiter. It is truly putting up a world class exhibit. The only one that has impressed me of the three. Definitely incredible, can't wait to see it this summer.
