In Orbiter Processing Facility-2, deservicing of Atlantis’ freon coolant loop #2 is scheduled to begin tomorrow.
Note that these are status updates from NASA.
http://www.nasa.gov/rss/shuttle_main.xmlAlso, courtesy of Tracy Young with NASA KSC PAO, the current plan (subject to change) is for Atlantis to move to the VAB sometime around January 20. It sounds like OPF-2 would remain unoccupied for several days before Endeavour would move in sometime around February 1.

So both orbiters in the VAB at once for a few days? Good time to visit.

And Discovery is getting her tail cone on, meaning that the orbiters should be free for a while.....

Agree.

If Atlantis were parked in the Transfer Aisle next to High Bay 4 where Endeavour currently is, then there could be some good opportunities for two-shots. Not sure that's where she'll go.

Visiting and doing VAB tour on January 28th. Would be cool if they had 2 in there to view at once. Might get a better tour of the VAB as well if they have two orbiters in the VAB at once.

Nice article, Chris!
Some RS-25E stuff would be interesting, although I don't think there is enough info for an article yet.

Includes STS-135 SSME info:
http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2012/01/ssme-family-sls-core-stage-role-shuttle-success/
Had to log back in and say what a beautiful article that was Chris, especially this paragraph:
"However, it’s their future role of becoming part of the SLS test program which has breathed new life into the famous engines, some of which will actually gain the honor of going out in style, launching one last time with the SLS during the first few missions."
(Signed: big fan of the SSME)

SSME is truly a remarkable engine, with performance that really is not matched by any other hydrogen engine. Any successors only look to compete on price, not performance which speaks volumes about the engine. Great article Chris.

Inside Orbiter Processing Facility-2 at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, space shuttle Atlantis is being prepared for removal of the top emergency escape window. The window is being removed in order to gain access to remove hazardous pyrotechnics from the shuttle. The window will be shipped to Johnson Space Center in Houston for inspections and a replacement outer pane will be installed in its place.

Does anyone have any information as to when/whether the Up Close tour will resume visiting the VAB after the move? Or how to find out?
At the moment I have a gap in my diary, and enough Virgin Flying Club points to cover the flight from the UK. I would really like to see inside the VAB, let alone see one or even two orbiters parked in there!
I saw Discovery on the pad for her first flight in 1984 and launch on STS-116, and Atlantis launch on STS-129 & 135. But I've never seen Endeavour at all...
On the other hand, it's a long way to come just to wind up being bussed to the A/B Camera Stop. Again...

Word is Atlantis will go in the Transfer Aisle first. (Until Endeavour moves later.)

Ground has been broken, expect better photos later
In that photo, we can see a canvas in the background showing a CGI image of the new exhibit. Interestingly, there appears to be an ET + two SRBs standing vertical - anyone know where these will come from? I thought the ones currently at KSCVC used for the Explorer exhibit were going to LA?
