Well… I guess that’s that then.
*Sigh* You know, I remember the launch of STS-1. I remember being
so excited; It was the first crewed American spacecraft that I could remember (I was less than 2 years old during ASTP). I remember watching on that battered old black-and-white TV we had back then that improbable, impossible and
wonderful white bird fly into the sky on a tail of fire and, at that moment, being sure that amazing things were coming.
I haven’t been
entirely disappointed. Hubble, Shuttle/Mir, ISS, Solar Max; All brilliant achievements that have raised the bar of human spaceflight. However, as always, the reality didn’t quite live up to the hype, as much as I wish it would have. I remember reading a book about SEI and wondering when the shuttle-derived transfer vehicle and landers would start flying. I looked forward to the first flight of Shuttle-C and the big in-line NLS.
Guys, seriously now: Thanks. Thanks for
everything. Thanks for taking the risk in the belief that it makes the world a better place. Thanks for daring to do wonders to remind us that wonders are
possible in a more-and-more cynical world. Doing great things despite hell, high water, politicians, career bureaucrats and ever-growing apathy from a world that seems to have come to despite daring to be great. Thanks. For
everything.
Will the last person out of KSC please remember to turn out the lights and close and lock the door; We might just need this stuff again.

I'm sorry, I guess it's just hitting me just what we're losing right now with a very long and uncertain interval to come. My (hopefully temporary) downer aside, please use this thread to post your farewells, reminiscences and other thoughts about the Space Shuttle Program.
