Yesterday I was able to take the Discover KSC: Today and Tomorrow tour. I've done a number of different tours there in the past, and I'd have to say this one was just OK, except for one thing. This was my first time at the photo stop location between the pads. That alone was worth the price of the ticket.

Nice photo! I haven't taken that particular tour, but did take the other one [think its something like Inside Nasa, or similar]. Got great photos of Discovery on the pad [well, her boosters and tank as the RSS was covering her up]. Unforgettable and loads of fun!

I'll be at NASA the 7th, 8th, and part of the 9th. Any recommended tours? I know they aren't going out on the 8th. So that leaves the 7th and 9th. As for the 7th, which tour might get me to see the pad?

Dot take this as official but with launch relatively early on the 8th there may not be many tours going out on the 7th that could see the pad. The 7th is also going to be crazy busy.
You might ask in the viewing thread when tours might stop the day before based on the launch time. I don't remember the schedule for how long before launch they stop because of other launch activities.

The clouds broke enough for me to see the launch for about one minute from Rockledge, on the Indian River about 20 miles southwest of the pad.
Large numbers of people were out on the riverbank and on the docks.

Montage of 4 shots taken at 1/2500, f8, ISO 320, with a 500mm Sigma lens (at 480mm) on a Canon 30d, cropped by about 25%.
Amazing experience.

Thx! Here is a photo of the bleachers I took...I was on the right side of the poorman's countdown clock.
Did you sign the banner at the entrance? I thought was so cool! I hope they put it up near Atlantis when she has her place at KSC...would be cool to have my name near her at KSC!

cleaned up a little in photoshop for sharpness and tone.
about halfway down the east side of the causeway.
...i think the only way i managed to get through that day at all was because i was so convinced it wasn't actually going to happen. all the way to t minus nine felt like a dress rehearsal, and then, suddenly, it wasn't on the pad any more.

hands down favorite is still and will forever be STS-131. ISS horizon-to-hoizon flyover before, mother of pearl colored exhaust plume after, and in between, the quiet stillness of the last launch before the four "last" launches (and their crowds). went up on the first try, on a perfectly comfortable evening. i could live in that moment forever.

I'm the one on the left side taking a photo...probably of the Delta facility.
Can't see me, as I am blocked by several people, but am still stunned when I look at this at how empty it was down at that end of the causeway, compared to some other shots further east that show people packed from the rope to the busses.

Viewing locations at Banana Creek and the causeway as seen from the VAB pictures:
I photographed the causeway as we approached the end of the T-9 minute hold. Unfortunately, the weather was not the best. There have been previous occasions, in which i could read the bus names from location. The link takes you to bigger and better res versions of what is attached. I can work a bit more in Photoshop to generate some bigger images or focus on particular sections of the causeway,if people are interested.

Again, each launch has its own personality. Thanks to a friend, I was invited to view from the West Causeway. Different angle, less crowded. Being surrounded by NASA employees and contractors, the vibe of the crowd ranged from somber to exuberance and pride.

Better even later than never! The first is an aerial view of KSC with Atlantis on the pad (albeit obscured by the service structures - 39A is leftmost) the second day before launch. The second is another shot from the causeway just before the cloud level was reached. Had to travel light so relied on a simple 'point and shoot' for each. DSW.

Wanted to cross-post/reply to this message from the viewing thread in the photo thread. Really a great photo of landing.
This almost has to be taken from the same weather station my wife and I watched from this morning. The only place elevated to see above the trees during landing and see the shuttle backlit against the building sunrise.
Many thanks to all on this forum because without this great info I'd have one less "memory of a lifetime"!

This almost has to be taken from the same weather station my wife and I watched from this morning. The only place elevated to see above the trees during landing and see the shuttle backlit against the building sunrise.
Indeed it was... We we're parked on top of that hill (red camaro)
And I'd like to echo the thanks for the tip on that viewing location - it was great!
One could always wish for less vegetation and an even better view, but as it turned out, this was as good as it gets without VIP/employee access

I had the exact same experience, same busses, going to the same place, witnessing the very last Space Shuttle launch with Endeavour's launch some weeks before, again from the same spot.
Thank you for the good memories.
I will always miss them.

After getting through the Stages of Grief for the Space Shuttle Program ending and over a serious bout of Procrastination, I pulled together my YouTube video of the STS-135 Atlantis launch. Just in time for Holiday sharing!
I wanted to capture the launch and mission experience. With the unexpected Hold at the T minus 31 second count and with extra story content, the video ended up at 22 minutes!
If you wish to jump ahead, select "Show More" of the "Description" and click on the [min:sec] timestamps. Resolutions for 720p HD and 1080p HD are available, but you may have to buffer to keep the playback smooth.
I will post the shorter scenes early in the New Year. I have already posted the shorter scenes from my STS-133 Discovery and STS-134 Endeavour launch videos. Find them on my YouTube channel

Better late than never, they say? Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I wanted to add my small contribution to this archive. I wasn't about to attend the STS-135 launch or landing due to my work schedule, but I could not pass up the opportunity to see Atlantis in person at some point during her mission. I have experience tracking ISS in orbit using my telescope and some software, but unfortunately there were no appropriate evening opportunities during 135 from my location in Florida. So I did what I had to do, track it in broad daylight. I knew it could be done in theory, ISS is bright enough to be seen in broad daylight, but I had never successfully done it with the telescope during the day. 1.25 hours after sunrise on July 17th, I took my shot.
I had aligned the telescope prior to dawn early that morning. That was the key to success. You can sync the telescope on a bright object during the day like the moon or a planet, but it's not as accurate as a proper 2 star alignment. The telescope performed brilliantly, it put ISS right in the field of view of the viewfinder camera, and within seconds I was able to adjust the tracking to put it in the field of view of the main camera (which is what I recorded with). I took 11 frames from the peak of the pass at the end of the video to stack with Registax and create this still image of Atlantis docked to ISS:

Last summer I attended the grand opening of the new Atlantis exhibit at KSC. I met commander Chris Ferguson during the autograph signing and he kindly autographed a print of my photo of his mission. He was rather shocked I was able to get a photo with that much detail.

Thank you PahTo! If I ever make it over there I'll be sure to stop in. The farthest west I ever seem to get is San Diego for Neuroscience conventions. One day though I'd love to see Mauna Kea, it's on the bucket list.

A bit of necrothread, but I was able to find a copy of my landing video and reup it, somehow I locked the original video and don't remember the login. Next is to try and find a backup copy of the STS-134 launch.
Long story, but I ended up covering the final two Shuttle missions as a full-on journalist, and by being a polite pain in the arse I ended up in the group standing by the VASI for the final landing of the program. I was told to stay out of the way of the real journalists, which I was happy to do. Thank you, NASA PAO and the NASA Security team for allowing me on the bus.I was sweating bullets because my video camera would not focus, luckily it kicked in right at the last second. I kept looking up at the sky expecting to see the nav lights of Atlantis until I realized Duh... it doesn't have any. Kind of a bummer but understandable that NASA took the first landing opportunity in the pre-dawn, they just wanted to get it on the ground and over with, but it also robbed everyone of seeing that magnificent sight one final time.
