It should be the next Russian launch...

Kompas-2 satellite is intended for testing of the scientific equipment ("Vulkan" theme) for forecasting of earthquakes from space...
It will be launched by Shtil' (RSM-54) rocket from Russian submarine K-114 "Tula" in Barents sea on May 25...

Do you know, which version of the Shtil' rocket will be employed? I guess it is the Shtil'-1N as in the Tubsat-N launch.
By the way, the Shtil rocket is very unique, as it jettisons the engine of the third stage before the post boost system takes over.

Do you know, which version of the Shtil' rocket will be employed?
No, unfortunately, Gunter...

But according to Novosti kosmonavtiki magazine we named this rocket officially as Shtil'-1 (not Shtil'-1N) at the first launch in 1998...

how is it that I can't view that page but still got my language settings at EN? But thanks for the update.
I've taken the liberty to add a Shtil page on
Wikipedia If you've got any additions, feel free to change it.

So what's the Russian expansion of KOMPAS?
In English, COMPASS = Complex Orbital Magneto-Plasma Autonomous Small Satellite.
In Russian I guess something like
Kompleksniy Orbital'niy Magento-Plazma Avtonomniy Sputnik?
Oh, and did we finally confirm that the sub is K-84 and not K-114, and:
was launch from a submerged position on this flight, rather than with the sub on the surface?

So what's the Russian expansion of KOMPAS?
Possibly
Kompleksniy
Orbital'niy
Magnito-
Plazmenniy
Avtonomniy
Sputnik...

But at Russian "Novosti kosmonavtiki" magazine (No. 2, 2002, p. 40) the first satellite of this type was named as "Kompass" (with two "s") and I do not know why the second satellite is written with single "s"...

UPDATING: Word "Compass" (in English) = word "Kompas" (in Russian)...

Then "Kompass" is written wrongly at NK...

jcm - 27/5/2006 1:05 AM
did we finally confirm that the sub is K-84 and not K-114
Exactly K-84 "Ekaterinburg", because K-114 "Tula" was my wrong information...

jcm - 27/5/2006 1:05 AM
was launch from a submerged position on this flight, rather than with the sub on the surface?
This launch was performed from the submerged position...

Has somebody additional information about the Compass. Because when I acces the Izimran news website I get an error. Is the satellite salvaged or has the problem resulted in a total loss?
