Do the Iranians plan to recover the monkey aboard Kavoshgar 4 or is the plan to mimic Sputnik 2? Seems like an awfully expensive way to kill something for no reason.

The Kavoshgar 4 won't go to orbit, only above the atmosphere, therefore quite easy to retrieve its content (basically with a single parachute).

And I think they have already done something like that.

That should reassure the monkey

According to http://www.zarya.info/Calendar.php there was a test launch in Iran.

Quote:
"2011 Mar 15  Kavoshgar 4 bio-capsule Launch
Kavoshgar LV, Iran
Test launch, with simulated biological payload, reported to have reached 120 kilometres at apogee and to have landed 300 kilometres downrange from the launch site.

Objectives were to test the system performance, including the launch vehicle, its engines, electronic and telemetry systems of the payload (including Earth imaging), and the separation, re-entry and soft landing systems.

A future launch will include a primate as a test subject. "

The Iranians got a lot of mileage out of a launch of a small sounding rocket, with some media outlets reporting this as an orbital launch.

Iran sends first 'life capsule' into orbit

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran says it has sent the country's first space capsule that is able to sustain life into orbit as a test for a future mission that may carry a live animal.

The state IRNA news agency says the capsule was carried by a rocket dubbed Kavoshgar-4 - or Explorer-4 in Farsi - some 75 miles (120 kilometers) into orbit.

The launch of the capsule is a part of Iran's ambitious space program. Thursday's report provides no other details about the "life capsule" but said it was launched on Tuesday.

Last year, Iran sent its first domestically made telecommunications satellite into orbit and announced it had successfully launched a rocket carrying a mouse, turtle and worms into space for research purposes.

There are concerns Iran's space program could also bolster its ballistic missile program.

How many times did the capsule orbit before falling back to earth ? 120 km seems to be unsustainable in terms of the orbital velocity needed. Or was this on a ballistic trajectory and not actual orbital flight ?

This was only a suborbital flight. Iran will need a bigger rocket to launch this into orbit.
