SpaceDev Streaker
« on: 12/23/2010 06:24 pm »
SpaceDev are planning to develop a rocket using the same hybrid propulsion system used in SSO, SST & Dreamchaser. but there is little info for that, how much would such a rocket cost. In theory hybrids seem like the best cost effective propulsion system.

That was a long time ago. Before they were aquired by sierra nevada.

"The SpaceDev Streaker will use patented High Performance Mass Fraction™ hybrid common core boosters that will equal the performance of solid rocket motors and some liquid rocket motors while remaining safe, responsive and affordable."

I'm not convinced that hybrids are the best cost effective propulsion method. You have most of the difficulties of both solids and liquids.

Indeed! "Hybrids: the worst of both worlds!"

I give them props for the name though.

I disagree as you don't have to deal with a volatile solid fuel as with solids and the plumbing is much simpler then a liquid engine.

They also can be shut down and restarted something most solid can't do.

The main down side to them is they tend to be low ISP.

Could 'Streaker' be a range of strap-on boosters? Maybe see if they can challenge ATK and Aerojet for 'dial-a-rocket' strap-ons for commercial launchers both new and old?
