Here are some pics of the launch from the employee site
http://hetlage.com/Gallery/Shuttle%20Images/STS-125/index.html
Great images. What body and lens did you shoot those with?
For the launch, I've rented a Sigma 150-500mm for my Canon 30d. I just can't afford to rent a Canon 600mm, and I figured I'd rather have the Sigma's extra 100mm than the superior optics of the Canon 100-400.
The crop on the Canon will take me to an 800mm equivalent. I'm thinking I'll stop down to f8 or f9, and bump the ISO to get to at least 1/500 shutter. Thoughts?
Thx - I shot those with a Canon 40D and a 400mm F2.8L and 2x Extender. I shot at f5.6, 1/1250th, ISO 100...later I found that f8 got me sharper images so I would go with that. Go full manual or aperture priority, turn off Autofocus (focus on the pad and tape it), turn off IS if you are tripod mounted. And don't do what my friend did which was hold the shutter down - you will fill up your buffer fast and miss shots...just take about 1 pic per second and you will be fine. (note the main engine exhaust..it comes straight at you on the Causeway). Tracking the shuttle as it fly's means you miss seeing the launch...you may want to setup your shot on a tripod and just use a shutter release to get the launch pic...and watch it fly - trust me it is more memorable that way! Have fun!

Fully agree with Cycleroadie! I listened to the posts on this website about 1st launches...STS-133 being mine. The launch goes so quick, the SRB flames are so bright, & you get to see it streaming into the launch cloud (incredible!!) and the colors are amazing! The sound concussions, the clear crackling, etc...if you take pics you will miss it! Just soak it up and enjoy! NASA provides great video and pics!
If you take pics take them obviously before the launch and after SRB sep.
Before Launch: beenie cap retraction, take a series of those
watch for the NASA helicopter flying around the shuttle
On STS-133 on the bus ride out we got to see the Astro van drive by with the NASA helicopter flying near it, got pics of both those! Bolden was in the helicopter on that one so those two pics were bonuses!
After launch: pics of whole launch cloud
close ups of drifting cloud around launch tower

Greetings NSF members.
Been lurking on here for some time now. The information posted here in the forums has been great, Thanks to all.
I got VC viewing tickets in the June 15 lottery. I thought I was supposed to get an email with a tracking number when KSC sent the tickets by FedEx supposedly by June 24.
I have no email and have no tickets so far.
I sure hope they arrive Monday as I have sold the tickets and have purchased causeway tickets on FDT.
As soon as I get the tix, I have to FedEx them to person who bought them from me.
I guess its a little too early to be worried about when they will arrive?
Are there still lots of people out there waiting for KSC tickets to arrive?
Getting a little worried I wont be able to get them to the second purchaser in time.
Ok not worried anymore - tickets arrived at noon today by FedEx

Just wondering, if I have a 300 mm lens should I be fine for the Bannana river/ causeway location?

Got my confirmation from Gator last night. Package is scheduled for delivery on June 28. Ottawa, Canada

When you go to the tracking page, does it say that it has been picked up or in transit, as mine is still sitting on "initiated"?
Mine had previously said anticipated delivery of July 27 at 12pm, but that has now disappeared.
I checked mine this morning and it said my tickets were in Champaign, IL. I live in Bloomington/Normal, IL which is the next town over. So I should have mine tomorrow. Keep checking!!!

You are pretty far away on the Causeway, yes it is an awesome place to watch a launch from but lets face it, the shuttle looks like an baby ant from this distance - it is 6.5 miles away after all...here is a shot from the VIP site, 3 miles away, using a 100-400mm lens if that helps (and its cropped)
http://hetlage.com/Gallery/Shuttle%20Images/STS-132/slides/sts-132_5d_med.html...imho the best shots from a distance are those well after the shuttle clears the pad with the smoke trail rising...and again, it is much better to just hold a shutter release cable in your hand and just watch it! Re-post but always an excellent resource...

Use a sturdy tripod and a remote cable. Stopping down will have limited results because atmosphere is the limiting factor on resolution. Also, slower shutter speeds are manageable on a tripod.
Compose, focus and set exposure in advance, then trigger at launch time. This way you're not fiddling with the camera or looking through the viewfinder during the launch. Be careful not to fill your buffer early - There will be nothing to see from your perspective until the shuttle clears the plume anyway.
Just wondering, if I have a 300 mm lens should I be fine for the Bannana river/ causeway location?
I would throw a 2x TC on that in either location, although for the Causeway, I'd prefer to longer lens to begin with (400 + 2x or 500 + 2x).

Thanks danduc. Hopefully they are safe and sound and in your hands tomorrow.
It appears that my tickets are lost in space

GL says they shipped them, FedEx says they didn't receive them. Not sure what is going on at this point, waiting to hear back from GL. Hopefully this is sorted out asap.

Tickets seem to take longer than usual to get to us. Gator Tours sent me an email some days back telling me they were shipped USPS International Express Mail with signed delivery.
I am still waiting for the big cardboard envelope. :-)
They should be here by now. I am not going to panic. Still have about a week as I am leaving early morning on the 5th via Zurich and EWR. I hope they will be here by then.
Maybe today! :-)

I know, I made my husband wait for them and call me as soon as they arrived. I cannot wait to take a picture of them and put them on my facebook page. Yes, I am weird like that.

Yes, I am weird like that.
Pish, Tosh.
Them's bragging rights.

Sadly, I think that in about a month, the country is going to finally realize the US manned spaceflight program will have come to a halt for the foreseeable future. It's the end of an era, and I think a lot of people are going to regret not having made an attempt to see this launch. (judging by how many spare Tour Bus tickets there seem to be on eBay, and how their pricing has fallen so much)

Tears will be flowing from my eyes when Atlantis leaves the pad.
I will be terribly sad. I am already. Will be even more so then.
