Nah, got FDT tickets already thanks - looking for Gator ones with a pickup in Kissimmee, otherwise I'll just use these. Thanks for the info anyway.

It's been 19 years since I saw a launch (I'm in Maryland), I was lucky enough to get a causeway pass for this launch. We'll be driving straight down (14 hours) from DC to KSC area on Thursday. Couple questions:
(1) when do launch forecasts start being issued? If it's L-3, that'd be Tuesday, do they go any further out than that (and if so, where can I find them!)
(2) How crazy will traffic be that day? We're planning on sleeping in ye olde mini-vane and trying to get in line at the gate about 6:00 am (will be hanging out in Cocoa Thursday night) - is that too early? too late?
Thanks!

Finally, if you have one, bring a battery for your iPhone, you'll be relying on 3G the whole day, so it'll be sucking down a lotta power if you don't exercise discipline with it (aka, keep it turned off most of the day).
The thing that you can do that will help you out the most whether you have an iphone or droid, or whatever, is to turn off your push e-mail. Don't have your phone trying to collect your e-mail every 15 minutes like you probably have it set up to do. Just set it for manual for the day. Then you can get it if you want, or just shut the world out for a day.
I have a Mophie battery backup case for my iphone, and with that, plus turning off push notifications, I was still at 100% battery at the end of the day on (original) launch day. That's 3am to about 11 pm

Along those lines, absolutely do not expect to be able to use your cellular data at KSCVC (lots of dead zones) or at the Causeway (great signal, but the networks get overwhelmed). I was there for STS-133 and for about 30 minutes before until even an hour or so after the launch the 3G on my iPhone was totally unusable (and before someone asks, I did try switching to Edge--it was no better). The signal meter showed plenty of signal, but nothing was going through. Imagine tens of thousands of people all trying to pull up NASA TV, or sending pics they've taken, or posting on twitter/facebook and it's not hard to see why everything screeched to a dead halt (think of Gator and Dolphin's web sites during the ticket sale for STS-135).
I had brought all kinds of gadgets (aforementioned iPhone as well as my iPad and a portable AT&T hot spot) thinking I'd be able to pull up NASA TV and upload all my pics and videos directly from the causeway--boy did I think wrong. Unless you have some other means of connecting to the internet (that isn't through one of the cell phone carriers) then you should not count on being able to get much of anything streamed, uploaded, or downloaded while at the causeway (and even on the bus for a while afterwards).

What are people's thoughts on going to watch the 3am Delta 4 launch on the 14th? I've read that the best place to view it is from Port Canaveral. Worth the drive out from Orlando?

No earlier than 2am. There is a spot somewhere on the 401 opposite the Marina that you can pick their free wifi up (if you can find it)

Anybody have thoughts (or inside knowledge) of when the booster recovery ships would be due back assuming everything goes to plan on the 8th?
The Endeavour STS-133 launch was about 3 hours earlier than Atlantis will be and they returned at sunset the next day. I'm just wondering if they could have come in before that and waited because they are only supposed to come in at sunset or if that was the earliest they could have been there coming directly from the recovery.
Also, do they come into the port after sunset? I would think docking for the night before going through the locks in the morning would be something they would want to have at least some light for. I figure they might also have some restrictions from the port since cruise ships may be going in/out.
I'm thinking that if the Atlantis launch is 3 hours later than Endeavour the possibilities for the booster ships returning are:
- Same time, sunset of day after launch
- After sunset and in the dark so not as much point to driving out
- First thing next day.

Delta IV launch - anyone interested in forming a meetup for the night of the 13th? 9pm late dinner, conversation, drinks, and out to view the launch around 2am? Assuming there are places open late round there which could accommodate us (any locals have any recommendation)? And/or at a hotel restaurant/bar, I'm staying near Port Canaveral.

I'm kind of livid with myself for not having found the forum earlier than when I did (for STS-134 - and this has been around since 2005!! AARRRGHH). Being a lone space fanatic is slightly hard.

With that off my chest - I'm forced to continue the ranting of the post because of the whims of the US Embassy in London.
I'd managed to wrangle an FDT Causeway ticket - which took logging into 5 computers on campus at Warwick while hitting F5 on all simultaneously, but apparently all that was a waste now that the embassy has denied me a tourist visa. Obviously I'd now like to sell these -
at face value - to someone else who really wants to go.
Price: $179
Tour Bus operator: Florida Dolphin Tours
Pick up time: 0200 hrs, July 8, 2011
Pick up and drop off location: Festival Bay Mall, Orlando
FDT don't e-mail tickets - so I don't have them - they have to be collected from their Orlando office before the day (up to 7 pm on the 7th)
OR at the pick up location (in which case you have to get there earlier). Will forward ticket confirmation number to the buyer, and then e-mail FDT advising them of the transfer to enable you to pick up ticket. PM me to get in touch.
Also - I'm kind of anxious to get it to someone who really wants to go - and not to a tout/reseller who'll use it to make a killing..
Have to hit the sack to attend UKSA's space conference on campus tomorrow, but please pass the word on to any interested space tweeps even if you're not buying.

To my astonishment, my congressional request went through and I now have a ticket to the Banana Creek viewing area!
Does anyone have any information on how the Banana Creek experience (including pickup, etc.) differs from the Causeway experience? For example, is it possible to use the Apollo/Saturn V Center facilities such as bathroom and concessions?

Ok, I need some ideas from some of you who have been there and done this. I will be at the launch and the 8th is also my oldest daughters 13th birthday. Where would you recommend taking her for a celebration dinner?

Any idea of a good place to park the car and sleep (in the car) for a few hours before the FDT pickup? FDT sent an email saying not to arrive sooner than 12:30.
