What rocket is this?
« on: 09/30/2010 08:13 pm »
I noticed these models. Two are the Soyuz R-7 in different variations, but the third one I have no idea. http://cosmopark.ru/r7/511_666b.jpg and http://cosmopark.ru/r7/511_667b.jpg  What is the name of the third rocket?

I've never heard of it. When does it fly?

Interesting indeed. If this is the rocket I think it is, it's essentially a Soyuz for the market of low mass satellites in LEO (hence the lack of the traditional 4 boosters). The real interesting part is that it's supposed to use the NK-33 engine, which Orbital is using for the Taurus II for the COTS contract. The engines are no longer in production, there's just a bunch of them left over from the 70's. I believe aerojet has a license to produce them in the US, but it's a tricky issue. It's possible the use of NK-33 in this Soyuz will prompt the restart of production in Russia.

I can see also another version of this new Soyuz with the strap on boosters. *snaps fingers*  What about a varient of the same strap on booster current  Soyuz with the NK-33 engines replacing the RD-107 and 108 engines?

The new series of soyouz vehicule is based on the NK-33 motor. Tha soyouz 2.1V is the light version and the first to fly probably in 2013 for military purpose from Plesetsk. Pads in Plesetsk are being upgrading for that.
The more capable soyouz vehicule (Soyouz 2.3) with NK 33 and the strap on boosters is not presently planned to be produced because its performance could be similar to the planned Rus-M, presently in development. Wait and see.
