Patches of Soviet space missions
« on: 09/03/2010 02:11 pm »
Hi all.

A quick question for you. Lately I’ve started to buy many space mission patches. I’ve seen on ebay that there are many patches related with soviet missions. I’m speaking about early soviet manned missions and my question is: are these patches real? I mean, if I’m right the Soviet started to design mission patches only quite late in the space program, not like the Americans that since the beginning started to design space mission patches. So I’m wondering if these patches that you can find on ebay are real patches designed for those missions or if they have been designed only later on by someone else just for the fun of designing patches for those missions?

Thanks
Davide

I'm not a major authority on space patches, but the really early ones (Vostok, Voskhod, early Soyuz) always struck me as souvenir patches. The first time I can note any Soviet Cosmonaut wore a patch on their pressure suit was for Soyuz 19 (ASTP).

Cosmonauts seemed to mostly wear program related patches until Mir flights (Salyut and Intercosmos for example).

so do you think there could be any utility in collecting those patches? I'm referring to the early ones. if at that time the cosmonauts didn't design any patch who has designed them now? Instead after Soyuz 19 they started to design patches mission by mission?

Thanks

Have a look at www.spacepatches.nl. Lots of backgrounds on Soviet/Russian spacepatches!

Cheers,
