Soviet cosmonaut Leonid Kizim, who in 1986 commanded the only mission in history to visit two space stations in one flight -- which also marked the first crewed flight to Mir -- died Monday, June 14, according to Russia's federal space agency Roscosmos. He was 68.

When he flew as the first Mir commander, with v Solovyov, somebody in Moscow told me that "there are two types of cosmonauts, those with big brains and those with big balls." We need them both. I hope that people like Kizim keep stepping forward, as Kepler predicted 400 years ago, to sail those ships between the stars.
