Progress M-M and Soyuz TMA-M nomenclature
« on: 05/04/2010 12:53 am »
I have an admittedly pedantic question.  Why do the first 9  Progress M-M and upcoming Soyuz TMA-M flights have a "0" before their number, as in Progress M-05M (instead of Progress M-5M) and Soyuz TMA-01M (instead of Soyuz TMA-1M).  Earlier versions of Progress and Soyuz did not do this (i.e., Soyuz TMA-1, not Soyuz TMA-01).  Just curious.

Do not look for deeper meaning in these numbers. It is not clear why even added a second "M" letter. Usually the letter "M" indicates that the vehicle is modified, but the Progress and the Soyuz is already modified. I think it's just a sign of lack of imagination among bureaucrats, and leading zero is inserted for the same reason.
Perhaps this was an interim designation, but at the time of launching the new designation did not come up or not approved.

Here's the reason for the two "M"s. I can't explain the extra "0". ;)

Progress M-1M cargo ship has arrived to Baikonur cosmodrome by train today. The launch by Soyuz-U rocket is planned on November 26th.

This cargo ship has new TsVM-101 computer (instead of old Argon-16 computer) and new MBITS compact digital onboard informing telemetry system (instead of old analog telemetry system).

This is not a reason for the two letters "M". Rather, it is reason for the new designations, such as Progress-Ts (Tsifrovoy - Digital). Adding a new letter "M", after each modification is unusual for Russian designation schemes of vehicles and equipment. This may lead to the Progress M-01MM and Soyuz TMA-01MMMM, if you know what I mean. :)

Computers sort data like this:
Soyuz 1
Soyuz 11
Soyuz 12
...
Soyuz 19
Soyuz 2
Soyuz 21
...

Who knows.  :-\

You are right! No mystery in the denomination. A "M" is used at each important modification or modernisation of the vehicle: Moving to digital controls is a significant change from "M" to "M-XXM". And for the "0" it's evident when the number of Progresses of the new series will reach 10: progress M-10M...
