Hmmm...there's something you don't see everyday: during the B-roll for today's preflight briefings they're showing brief highlights of some of Atlantis' missions over the last 25 years and one of the bits in there was a clip from STS-27, showing the crew playing (American) football on the middeck.

What are those bright flashes coming out of the SSME's between 3:26 - 3:41?
There were no MPS issues noted on the L+2 Hour Ascent Report or the Consolidated Ascent Report.
According to Chris B, there were observations in the SSME plumes between T+27 and T+59 seconds. Initially attributed to lighting conditions but under evaluation.
I've seen this dramatically during a previous ascent (I don't recall which one but it wasn't a lot of missions ago), and I'm curious myself.

I wonder if it was debris igniting.

MEDIA ADVISORY: M30-10
NASA RELEASES FIRST-EVER HIGH-DEF FOOTAGE OF SHUTTLE "ICE TEAM"
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. â?" NASA has released the first-ever up close,
high-definition video of Kennedy Space Center's Final Inspection Team
walkdown in the final hours before a space shuttle launch. The
footage was shot on May 14 at Kennedy's Launch Pad 39A during the
countdown for shuttle Atlantis' STS-132 mission.
The six-member inspection team, also known as the "Ice Team," walks on
every level of the launch pad's fixed service structure and mobile
launcher platform base, inspecting the shuttle, external fuel tank,
solid rocket boosters, pad structure and ground equipment for signs
of ice buildup, debris or anything else that might be amiss prior to
launch. As part of the inspection, photos are taken and transmitted
to the launch team for review.
A NASA videographer was included on the team for Atlantis' launch to
document this important and hazardous process. The footage was
captured with a Panasonic HPX 3700 high definition, cinema-style
camera with 1080 progressive scanning at 24 frames per second.
The video will be broadcast in standard definition on NASA
Television's Video File. For NASA TV downlink information, schedules
and links to streaming video, visit:
http://www.nasa.gov/ntvTo view the HD video on the NASA YouTube page, visit:
http://www.youtube.com/nasatelevision For more information about Atlantis' STS-132 mission and the Space
Shuttle Program, visit:

Check out this awesome photo of an F-15E patrolling the skies as Atlantis launches!

Lt. Col. Gabriel Green and Capt. Zachary Bartoe patrol the airspace in an F-15E Strike Eagle as the Space Shuttle Atlantis launches May 14, 2010, at Kennedy Space Center, Fla.
