At the Baikonur Cosmodrome delivered spacecraft "AMC-4F"

31.03.2010

http://www.roscosmos.ru/main.php?id=2&nid=9873

Yesterday, March 30 at the airport "Jubilee" at the Baikonur Cosmodrome cargo aircraft AN-124-100 "Ruslan" were delivered spacecraft "AMC-4F" and ground support equipment.

Later containers with the spacecraft and equipment were transported to the assembly and testing facility (MIK 92-A50), designed for pre-launch rocket "Proton" and the payload. After installing the necessary equipment in clean room Mika, specialists will work directly with the spacecraft.

Launch Proton-M booster unit and "Breeze-M" for the launch of a spacecraft AMC-4R were delivered to Baikonur earlier.

Start the Proton-M "spacecraft" AMC-4F "is scheduled for the end of April this year.

Well,

is SES-1 a 3,170 kg craft (that is what OSC says, "launch mass"),
or a 2,561 kg satellite (as ILS mentions it´s "separated mass")?
Maybe it´s with and w/o fuel?

Not sure about this one, but some of these OSC Star satellites were to have been launched by Zenit rockets; the propellant would be needed to get them into their final geostationary orbit. Now they are going up on a Proton, it is powerful enough to carry them directly to geostationary orbit - in fact with capacity to spare; SES-3 is to share a ride with KAZSAT-2.

The STAR buses only use oxidizer for orbit raising, so when one flies by itself on a Proton, they just don't load oxidizer.

No or almost no oxidizer loading? Are they going from the 33871 x 33871 km 0 degree orbit to GEO after being launched on proton by using attitude control thrusters only? (is there a apogee engine on bord?).

Will there be a launch delay because of the investigation of the probs of Galaxy 15, which also is built by OSC?

As mentioned there http://www.federalspace.ru/main.php?id=2&nid=9046, work is going on in Baikonur. SES 1 was mated with the Breeze-M.

http://www.roscosmos.ru/main.php?id=2&nid=10115

Roscosmos industry continues prelaunch operations with Proton-M rocket, Breeze-M upper stage and US telecommunication spacecraft АМС-4R at Baikonur.

Integration of the upper composite, as well as testing of the assembly, has been completed. The upper composite which consists of Breeze-M/AMC-4R under the fairing is being transported to the assembly hall today for further integration with Proton-M.

This step is to be followed by prop filling of the Breeze-M low pressure tanking.
The roll out is to take place on April 20.

The launch is scheduled for April 24, at 15.19 MSK.

Comparing SES financial results presentations for Q3-2009 and for the year 2009, it appears that:
SES-1 = AMC-4R
SES-2 = AMC-5R
SES-3 = AMC-1R

Russian Proton to Loft US Satellite

17.04.2010

http://www.roscosmos.ru/main.php?id=2&nid=9119

On April 24, Russian carrier Proton will lift off from Baikonur to orbit US telecommunication spacecraft АМС-4R under the contract signed between Proton launch service provider ILS and US satellite service provider SES.

Proton has already lofted 16 satellites for SES, with the 17th to come on April 24. SES’ orbital constellation comprises 42 spacecraft.

International Launch Services Inc. (ILS)  is a U.S. based company with exclusive rights for worldwide commercial sales and mission management of satellite launches on Russia’s premier vehicle, the Proton, as well as the Angara next-generation launcher. Set up in 1995, ILS is headquartered in Reston, Va., a suburb of Washington, D.C.

Khrunichev, which is one of the cornerstones of the Russian space industry, holds the majority interest in ILS. Khrunichev manufactures      the Proton system and is developing the Angara launch system.

ILS has conducted over 50 commercial missions with the Proton vehicle.

The thread is renamed with correct name of satellite. SES-1 is the name chosen by customer. It does not matter how Roskosmos names it. Roskosmos continues to name it as AMC-4R, because such name was in the agreement. Roskosmos do not like to change documents to update name of satellite.

Even using the wrong satellite name on their press-realeases, Krunichev has some photos related to the SES-1 Upper Composite being integrated with the launcher.

Note the name of the satellite on the fairing... SES-1! ;)
