Qualified applicants need to have completed a training program from their government or recognized space agency and have at least some flight experience on a recognized space mission. Specialized training and/or experience (ie: Medical, Payload Specialist, EVA, Pilot, etc.) is not a pre-requisite, but is definitely a plus.
Is this the first instance of a private company hiring astronauts for orbital work?
Spacex has already hired astronauts for in house and space activities. Ken Bowersox (hope I spelled that right) comes to mind as an example.
There was that dude in Oregon (the toy designer) who built his own rocket and advertised for astronauts. Dont know how realistic his whole scheme is, haven't heard anything from them in a long while.
