Ofeq-9 launch - June 22, 2010
« on: 02/03/2010 05:06 pm »
Hi,
rough translation from here:
http://www.nrg.co.il/online/1/ART2/047/317.html?hp=1&loc=2&tmp=2155

For those of you who don't know hebrew :)

In a few months Ofeq 8 will be launched from an air force base in central Isarel. The weight will be 300 Kg and it will utilize the Shavit Launcher. The satellite will have gradual improvements compared to previous Ofeq 7

More details in english about Ofeq 9:
http://www.spacenews.com/military/091113-ofeq-8-nearing-launch-ofeq-9-stalled.html

What`s the failure rate of Shavit? 40%?

Shavit is not such a bad Launcher if you compare it with other rocket Launchers of this class.

Ofeq 1 - success
Ofeq 2 - success
Ofeq   - unconfirmed failure during 1991-1993
Ofeq   - unconfirmed failure during 1991-1993
Ofeq 3 - success
Ofeq 4 - failure (announced)
Ofeq 5 - success
Ofeq 6 - failure (announced)
Ofeq 7 - success

So, nine launches, four failures to reach orbit.   Not a very impressive record.

I wonder if Ofeq 8 will carry a parachute and floatation collar?

No news yet of a new Israeli launch?

If you take the average interval between Ofeq launches starting with Ofeq 3, a new launch is slightly overdue.

Has anyone heard any news of the Ofeq 8 launch that was reported for a few weeks ago?   The last two launch failures were promptly reported, so I guess that the satellite is still awaiting launch.

Has anyone heard anything further about an Ofeq 8 launch?

Based upon previous launches, this month is about the latest that I was expecting a new satellite, unless Israel is happy with the two EROS and two Ofeq satellites already in orbit.

I Phillip! The lasy news I eard was that the launch would take place in the middle of this year. I remember that the Ofeq-7 was not announced, so I thunk we should expect the same with the next Isreali launch.

The policy is not to announce :(
But you do get leaks sometimes in the local papers, as above.

I admit that I was surprised when there were the rumours that the launch was about to take place earlier this year, although I had been expecting it during the period October 2009-April 2010.

I am waiting to see how it compares with the earlier Ofeqs in terms of orbital manoeuvres: Ofeqs 3, 5 and 7 have all been different, with 7 having a much lower apogee eccentric orbit (indicating a heavier satellite?).

So what happened to Ofek-8?

That's what I was thinking too. We know that in the past there were several attempts by Israel to launch satellites. It's possible that there was a launch failure since 2007?

The strange thing is that earlier this year there were reports that the Ofek-9 programme had "stalled". Those still stated that Ofek-8 would be the next launch, but I doubt if there had been a failure in the last few months they could have turned around and launched again so quickly.

This article calls the rocket an "improved" Shavit, mentioning three stages.

Any ideas about the "improvement"?

Insiders report otherwise. Allegedly, the rename of Ofeq-8 into Ofeq-9 was an attempt to break the jinx of even numbers. Yes, I too think that it's a batshit insane explanation, but reportedly the initiators of it feel completely vindicated today. Wait for Ofeq-11 now.

I think, it referres to the stretched version, which was also used in the launch of Ofeq 7

There were three known evolutions of the Shavit rocket:
* Shavit with ATSM-9 motors as 1st and 2nd stages
* "Shavit-1" with stretched ATSM-13 as 1st and standard ATSM-9 as 2nd stage
* "Shavit-2" with stretched ATSM-13 as 1st and 2nd stages

Images of the three versions for comparison:

According to user Leroy from Novosti Kosmonavtiki forum:
http://www.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10932&start=36
who was launch eyewitness (800-900 meters from the launch site), the rocket launched exactly at 22:00 local (19:00 GMT).

I have just run the initial Two-Lines through my launch time calculator and that gives a time of 18:59 UT.   So a launch on the hour is within my error bound.

Agreed
Comparing the ground track with that of Ofeq 7, I get 19:00 UT +/- 1 min

With the retrospective renaming of TechSAR to Ofeq 8 to avoid the Great Even-Numbered Ofeq Destroyer, can we look forward to EROS-A 1 and EROS-B becoming Ofeqs 10 and 12 at some point?

On a more serious note, this could be the last Ofeq/photoreconnaissance launch for a while.   It is reported that this is the final flight of the 2000 platform and that future launches will use the 3000 platform, unveiled at Paris in 2007.   However, Israel is looking for international collaboration for the development of the new satellite platform - maybe India? - and so this funding problem could cause a longer gap in launches than the 2.5-3 years that we have seen typically since 1995.

Tecsar and opsat 300 are basiclly the same platform:
http://www.iai.co.il/32540-32805-en/MediaRoom_NewsArchives_2005.aspx?PageNum=5

So the platform is already "proven" w/tecsar launched 2008.

Also the Israel/French VENUS science satellite which should be launched 2012 (got delayed already for a couple of years from 2009/2010) looks to use the same platform.

A News item from channel 10 in Israel
http://news.nana10.co.il/Article/?ArticleId=727432&sid=126

Has a nice animation, some footage from the control room and a few words from an IAF officer as well as the head of the space program at the Israeli MoD, saying that it was his tenth launch - and the excitment was as high as the first launch.

Tenth launch? So two unconfirmed launches (1991/1993) are confirmed now?
