They aren't!

The report mixed Gonets-M with GLONASS-M, but these systems are completly different. Gonets-M is a low earth orbit store-dump communication system, while GLONASS is a intermediate orbit navigation system.

So Gonets-M has no relation to GLONASS, despite all the Russian reports saying it is, and none of our Russian friends on here correcting it?

What the heck, even Rosmoskos has "the Gonets-M satellite is intended to provide digital user terminal GLONASS positioning data, as well as electronic mail services"

Changing the article, but that's absolutely unbelievable and very unprofessional of them when you can't even trust the Russian Space Agency's own site. Thanks Gunter!

The Roskosmos page is just a "here's what other news services are saying about us" page, although they don't make that very clear.
The only official statement I can see is

from Khrunichev PAO, which doesn't say anything about the payload.

I did wonder if Gonets might have some kind of Glonass *receiver* on board that could be used as an augmentation system of some kind... but we certainly haven't heard of this before. Gunter's assumption that Novosti has just stuffed it up completely is also plausible.

OK, now I see http://www.khrunichev.ru/main.php?id=1&nid=1797 - a press release from the launch service provider Khrunichev which makes the statement about the user terminals getting GLONASS data. Now Khrunichev don't make the payload, but I would not expect them to get this wrong (I would actually trust them more than Roskosmos in fact). I think this is the source of the other (Novosti-RIAN news agency) story. So I'm back to leaning on the idea that Gonets-M has some kind of payload that augments Glonass in some way. Russian friends? Hello?

The other possibility is that it's like Orbcomm. You can imagine that if you have a Glonass receiver on your lorry, which sends an encoded message to a dedicated transponder on Gonets, Gonets then relays that Glonass data (saying where your lorry is) back to headquarters, at the cost of very very few bytes (so cheap).

Or, with a Glonass receiver on each Gonets, the *Gonets* satellites can know where *they* are and (with degraded accuracy) send out a Glonass-compatible signal, this is the 'augmentation' idea.

If the Russian's have not in fact done either of these things with Gonets, they should, and I'd like 5 percent of the gross please.

There is apparently some kind of relationship between Gonets-D1 and GLONASS. My Russian isn't good enough - so here only a machine translation from http://www.gonets.ru/?page=4
