Proton-M Assembly at Baikonur
26-10-2009

http://www.federalspace.ru/NewsDoSele.asp?NEWSID=7940

Russian space industrial experts integrate the Proton-M rocket which is to loft W-7 spacecraft at the end of November.
The first stage of the rocket is being mated with the assembly of the second and third stages, prior to installing the rocket into the test bench.
In parallel, foreign specialists process European spacecraft W-7. The telecommunication satellite is to be injected into 36w orbital position. W-7 will provide services for Europe, Russia, Africa, Middle East and Central Asia.
Proton was successfully launched 7 times this year. 5 of them were under commercial contracts which cover launches of foreign satellites.

09-11-2009

http://www.federalspace.ru/NewsDoSele.asp?NEWSID=8124

Proton-M/Eutelsat W-7 processing continues at Baikonur.
Foreign experts, supported by Khrunichev Space Center specialists, perform autonomous tests of the satellite.
Proton-M rocket also undergoes tests. Specialists check pyro-devices, which serve for separation of the stages during the launch phase.
Proton-M is scheduled to loft the satellite in late November.

Mission Profile:                   The Proton M launch vehicle, utilizing a 5-burn Breeze M mission design, will lift off from Pad 39 at Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, with the W7 satellite on board. The first three stages of the Proton will use a standard ascent profile to place the Ascent Unit (payload fairing, Breeze M upper stage and the W7 satellite) into a sub-orbital trajectory. From this point in the mission, the Breeze M will perform planned mission maneuvers to advance the Orbital Unit first to a circular parking orbit, then to an intermediate orbit, followed by a transfer orbit, and finally to a geo-transfer orbit.  Separation of the W7 satellite is scheduled to occur approximately 9 hours, 12 minutes after liftoff.

http://www.kt.kz/index.php?lang=rus&uin=1138536794&chapter=1153503740

Roscosmos calls the delay with W7 satellite launch a misapprehension caused by delay on getting a launch clearance from Kazakhstan. Roscosmos officials confirm all the necessary documents had been agreed upon and hope that it's going to be dissolved as soon as possible and the launch will be commenced on the backup date November 24, 2009.

On other hand, Kazcosmos informs that W7 launch has not been provided for by this year's agreed launch schedule. According to them, Roscosmos submitted the launch permission request to Kazakh Prime Minister's Chancellary as late as on September 26, 2009. To quote Kazcosmos' message, "Russian side was duly informed that decision taking process within Government of Kazakhstan takes considerable time and is not over yet at the moment".

The ILS site hasn't been updated yet, still listing the status as "Delayed" and the blog hasn't been updated either.  Are things actually on track for a launch today?

Cloud base at the launch site was incredibly low.  The Proton-M vanished into the clouds when it was barely clear of the tower!

Note that this is a long mission! There are five Breeze-M ignitions before W7 separation!

Online Herb Schaltegger

Note that this is a long mission! There are five Breeze-M ignitions before W7 separation!

That's the downside of a GTO launch from such a high latitude launch site. But hey, ILS offers a very competitive service that's pretty reliable so the long launch mission is worth it.

From the W7 blog posted at 1816UTC:

We have confirmed that the Breeze M upper stage has successfully completed its 3rd & 4th burns, as well as jettisoning its additional propellant tank. The vehicle is now in a 5-hour coast period, during which we will have nothing to report. The 5th burn is scheduled to start around 6:11 p.m. EST, or 23:11 GMT. Separation of the W7 spacecraft is scheduled to follow the 5th burn completion by about 14 minutes.

ILS PROTON SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHES

THE W7 SATELLITE FOR EUTELSAT

BAIKONUR COSMODROME, Kazakhstan, November 24, 2009 – International Launch Services (ILS), a world leader in providing mission and launch services to the commercial space industry, successfully carried the W7 satellite to orbit for Eutelsat Communications of France on an ILS Proton. The Proton vehicle lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome at 8:19 p.m. local time (9:19 a.m. EST, 3:19 p.m. in Paris, 14:19 GMT).  After a 9 hour 12 minute mission, the Breeze M successfully released the W7 satellite into geostationary transfer orbit.

The launch of the W7 satellite marks the 6th ILS Proton launch of the year and the 55th commercial launch overall for ILS.  In April of this year, ILS launched the W2A satellite for Eutelsat, marking the 50th ILS Proton milestone. The Proton Breeze M vehicle is built by Khrunichev Space Center of Moscow, one of the pillars of the Russian aerospace industry and majority owner of ILS. Proton has a heritage of 349 missions since its inception in 1965.

The 5627 kg W7 satellite was built on the Spacebus 4000 C4 platform by Thales Alenia Space and has a 15 year life expectancy.  The most powerful satellite in Eutelsat’s fleet, W7 will be situated at 36 degrees East to replace Eutelsat’s SESAT 1 satellite, launched on Proton in early 2000. W7 will double the capacity available within a key neighborhood among the fleet of geostationary satellites and provide enhanced coverage for Central Asia and Africa.

Frank McKenna, president of ILS said, “ILS and Khrunichev were uniquely poised to meet Eutelsat’s stringent requirement to launch in 2009 with our ability to integrate this mission in less than five months from contract to launch. It was an honor to demonstrate this capability with the successful launch of the W7 satellite today, just seven months after the landmark 50th ILS Proton launch with Eutelsat’s W2A satellite. We thank Eutelsat for once again, counting on ILS Proton to contribute to the expansion of their business.”

“We are pleased to continue our long term relationship with ILS with the launch of W7 on the powerful Proton Breeze M rocket. The flexibility and schedule adherence that ILS offers and delivers are essential to the continued success of our business. This on-time launch will allow Eutelsat to boost coverage and flexibility for addressing growing markets, notably in Russia and Africa. Our thanks and appreciation go out to the entire mission team for their diligent work and to ILS and Khrunichev for ensuring that the W7 launched on time this year,” said Michel de Rosen, CEO of Eutelsat.

What is RB-2A?
As mentionned by Thomas, it is just the name ("RB-2A" means "Reverse Band-2A") under which the DirecTV-12's 17/24 GHz portion of the payload is known at the FCC, the rest of the payload is in the conventional Ka band.
DirecTV-12 launch is planned in December, the Kazakhstan space agency has been informed on November 2...
