More progress shots on the shuttle....I'm almost done with the ET-SRB stack.

I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

I have had a Centuri 1/100th scale Saturn V for about 37 years, finally worked up the courage to build it to launch in honor of the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11.  My build thread is here.

I finally finished it tonight, just under the wire!  Weather won't allow me to launch tomorrow (too hot, dry, and windy) but she's a beauty!

Looks like a superb job!  You did very well on yours.  How do you plan to fly it, three engine cluster?  Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks Dave, I have set it up to fly either 3 18mm engines, or 29mm single engine (I guess I could stick a 24mm adapter in the 29mm mount)--everybody says you have fly it clustered for the full effect, so I guess I will try both.

Almost done with the shuttle!

Just one or two more days.  Then I start on the launch tower and try to finish the Saturn.  I'd hoped to finish it by the 20th of July but I don't think I'll make it.

Excellent work there chaps, on both the Saturn V and shuttle. Always amazed at some modellers can work so fast (and maintain their standards)

Thanks Keith.  It's taken me 2 months of work on the shuttle to get to this point.  And I've still got lots of work to go on Saturn - the ribbed areas on the Monogram kit are pretty troublesome.

Launch report 7/19/2009

I wanted to launch my Centuri 1/100th Saturn V for the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11.

Today we got to fly! It was dead calm (a rarity in Oklahoma) and I had my son to assist by launching while I took pictures.

First off, a salute to Mercury by launching my vintage Centuri Mercury Redstone.

Next, a tip of the hat to the (hopefully) future by launching my Jupiter-120.

Finally the big show! I outfitted my Saturn V to fly on either the standard 3 engine cluster or a single 29 mm engine. So I flew it once on 3 C6-3s and then on an F20-4.

The first flight was fantastic! The rocket went straight up (no slip on fins--just stock Centuri) and came back almost on top of the pad--my son and I caught the booster and upper section before they even touched the ground!

The second flight didn't turn out well, I forgot to bring the clear slip on fins. RockSim says the static margin is .95. I didn't see the flight as I was looking through the viewfinder, but my son said after the rocket got up in the air, it turned on its side and flew horizontal. It didn't get much altitude and fell on its side, hitting the ground before ejection. Thank goodness the soccer field we were flying on was soaked and very soft. The Saturn suffered very little damage--mostly covered in mud. But it was a great looking liftoff!!

Nice!  I like that display stand, did it come w/ the kit or is it scratch built?

Display stand is from the Revell 1/96 model. It's about the only thing that's any good about that kit!

And I've finished my Saturn V on the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 crew's safe return back to earth, in the Pacific.  The Saturn and the Shuttle go great together.

The jleslie site has a cool SD-HLV model up for download if anyone is interested. I think I will have to give it a go, since I have the other CLV options covered already with Jupiter-120, Delta IV HR, and Ares I.
