I have had a Centuri 1/100th scale Saturn V for about 37 years, finally worked up the courage to build it to launch in honor of the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11. My build thread is here.I finally finished it tonight, just under the wire! Weather won't allow me to launch tomorrow (too hot, dry, and windy) but she's a beauty!
Looks like a superb job! You did very well on yours. How do you plan to fly it, three engine cluster? Good luck and let us know how it goes.
Launch report 7/19/2009I wanted to launch my Centuri 1/100th Saturn V for the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11.Today we got to fly! It was dead calm (a rarity in Oklahoma) and I had my son to assist by launching while I took pictures.First off, a salute to Mercury by launching my vintage Centuri Mercury Redstone.Next, a tip of the hat to the (hopefully) future by launching my Jupiter-120.Finally the big show! I outfitted my Saturn V to fly on either the standard 3 engine cluster or a single 29 mm engine. So I flew it once on 3 C6-3s and then on an F20-4.The first flight was fantastic! The rocket went straight up (no slip on fins--just stock Centuri) and came back almost on top of the pad--my son and I caught the booster and upper section before they even touched the ground! The second flight didn't turn out well, I forgot to bring the clear slip on fins. RockSim says the static margin is .95. I didn't see the flight as I was looking through the viewfinder, but my son said after the rocket got up in the air, it turned on its side and flew horizontal. It didn't get much altitude and fell on its side, hitting the ground before ejection. Thank goodness the soccer field we were flying on was soaked and very soft. The Saturn suffered very little damage--mostly covered in mud. But it was a great looking liftoff!!
Adding my bone stock Estes #2001 1/100th scale Saturn V. Haven't flown it yet.
