Nicely detailed. When I first bought the Intermountain Kit in 1998, I built the whole thing. When I realized it was never going to look like that, I tried to undo it. I was semi-succcessful, but last year I decided to get a new kit and redo it making surenot to glue most of it so I could add and move sections as we go along.

On another note, check this out....a friend over on the Space-Modelers group made a New Horizons model from scratch!:

What a great thread. I had both of those shuttle models too, once upon a time. Didn't the larger one come with two little plastic astronauts?

I am totally blown away by the stuff you guys have posted in this thread. True pieces of art, every one...

Yes, You're right. One was on an EVA, the other guy "stood" on the flight deck reaching for overhead panels. The EMU looked okay on the 1:72 model. His little friend from the 1:144 had no backpack.

By the way: I will soon post results from a hilarious e-mail volley I had with Revell regarding that inverted flag on the wing of the re-released 1:144 orbiter. It's unbelievable -- it seems they are insisting it was no error. I cannot believe they are serious, so I am waiting for one final reply from them...

For the big one (the 1:72 model) is it the "Challenger" box? I seem to remember the part about it containing labels for all four shuttles at the time.

THis thread is REALLY making me want to get back into it. I used to build all the time. I don't have any supplies anymore, and I've become so OCD in my old age, I would have to spend a bundle to get the best airbrush, paint, brushes, ect...

It is the same model that was re-released repeatedly over the years. It was sold as Enterprise in the 70s. By the mid-80s Revell sold it as Challenger. Around RTF-1, the package read Discovery.

The paint scheme and decals were updated over the years -- the molds for the parts were not. The kit that I was showcasing at the start of the thread is the current re-release.

Does anyone know of a place to buy a kit for the SRBs and ET in a 1:72 scale? Does this actually exist?

Has anybody built the MRC 1/12 scale Mercury spacecraft with the LES and all?

I used to build more model rockets and planes. But the natural enemy of the scale model is the housecat.

Yep, long retired Monogram production though. It can be had on ebay for a good $50 or so now. They are fairly uncommon.

Wow, I think I actually had that kit as a kid, though I don't think I ever actually finished it...

At any rate, here is my 1:100/1:96 paper model rocket collection:

From Left ot Right: Vega, Kosmos LV, Blue Streak :), Proton, Soyuz TMA LV, Juno II, CaLV, Spunik, H-IIA, CLV, Satun IB, Gemini-Titan, Mercury-Atlas, Saturn V, Mercury-Redstone; along the front: Soyuz TMA, Endevour with the Destiny module, and finally, DynaSoar.

It looks like there are several payload items included -- and not just one Spacelab. There's a long module, but there also seems to be a short one, just the core, i.e., like on EOM-01 or the plasma lab missions.

Hey!  Some great looking models here!  I'm in the process of building some Shuttle Models and wanted to know what color paints people have used to match the ET.   I know that I'll have to mix colors but not sure what colors to get.   Also did you use spray cans or an air brush?

Thanks for your help.

Besides Ebay, keep your ears to the ground at model shows and good hobby shops, (the kind where the owner knows the subject and atracts club members; not the mall kind of place.)

Most builders have "spares" boxes, and often have unexpected parts from partly finished projects, or damaged items. Somebody has the tanks and SRBs from a Stack with a ruined Orbiter!

I picked up the Monogram "Space Missiles" kit (1969 version w/Titan II,) Friday, for a fraction of its Ebay value, because a local shop owner knew I liked missiles and was interested in building, not collecting, ...the Atlas A in the kit had been started and there were no decals.

Ben,
That's a trick.   There isn't a shade of paint suitable for the ET pre-mixed by any manufacturer out there that I've seen.   So, the only option is to mix red & yellow together to get just the right shade you're after.   Mostly Yellow, add a little touch of red and mix thoroughly.   Keep adding until it gets to the right shade.

Personally I use Testors Model Master paints and an airbrush to get the effect I want on ET's.   If you're picky enough, doing it that way also allows you to colour parts of the tank a different shade to simulate the tanning the top of the tank receives while it's sitting on the pad.

Thanks to you and Ben for the advice. Unfortunately, it seems there are not many good hobby type stores in my area that I know of, which is Richmond, VA. Anyone know anything about shops in the area?

I am thinking about getting instead the Revell Launch Tower and Space shuttle 1:144 kit. That looks like alot of fun. But first, I have to purchase, then learn how to use the airbrush. I am thinking about either an Iwata, but there are several inexpensive Badgers for sale on Ebay I could get to try out first. I will have to build a spray booth as well.

The Revell version is my favorite. A couple cautions are in order though, depending on how picky you are.

in 1/144, Revel placed the main landing gear wells 5 mm too far aft and 3 mm too far outboard. (This to avoid the wells crossing the wing/fus join structure?)

Also payload bay is slightly short, from the aft end, and there are no umbilical doors.

If doing a "modern" mission, all kits need to have the drogue chute vertical recontoured. (I am working STS-84 now.)

You're most welcome.   I was there once myself, and somone else was able to help me out in a very similar fashion - actually someone from that space modelers yahoo group mentioned previously.

Like the guys and gals on this forum, there's always someone around to offer a bit of assistance, advice, constructive criticism and encouragement.   It's one of the many reasons I've remained a regular viewer, and contributor, to that group, and the same reason why I'm on this forum too - the two groups are both great places to e-hang-out :)

Those sites are awesome! I have already learned so much about model building in the three weeks I have been lurking on thier forum...
