Has anyone heard of, or attempted larger scale Shuttle or Apollo CM models?  I'm thinking an orbiter about 3 or 4 feet long, up to about 6 or 7 ft long?  I have no idea what scale that would be.

There was a user here who forwarded me the photos below of a large scale model in the Houston area, and I'm thinking smaller than this.

I would be interested to know how difficult it would be to maybe translate some basic dimensions into some plans for say a plywood shell, which could be painted and then detailed?

Perhaps the scale for common 12 inch action figures, which would make filling out a crew manifest easier!

Wow that's cool!

Lots of great models in thus forum, including the LUT/Crawler and the Atlas V.  Reminds me of the impressive models that ULA had on display at AIAA Space 2007.  Boeing had an Ares V model that looked pretty poor, considering the budget that Boeing has for producing these models.

Seeing the Monogram X-30 brought back a rush of memories.  That's a very unique kit, and I wish Revell-Monogram would re-release it as part of their Selected Subjects Program.

Hi Pad Rat,

That X-30 looks great! Those additional decals really make.

I've got a few more models waiting to be built.

WOW!  I've got a set of shelves that look a lot like that!  Just not enough time.  All my built ups from the 60's and early 70's went "missing" after leaving for college. Spend the past few years on ebay trying to recover my lost past bit by bit.

A few of yours on the bottom shelf really bring back memories... i.e., the "Pilgrim Observer"  haha.... and my favorite of all time: the 1/32 Revell Apollo CSM.... where one third of its exterior had  clear plastic panels, so you could see the interior.  Also, the detail was great (for a commercial kit of its time).

What with the Jupiter 2, the Invaders UFO, etc... I'm surprised I don't see the grandDaddy of all saucer shape craft:  The Forbidden Planet C-57D United Planets Cruiser.  Now there's a model I always wanted.

C57D is at the bottom of the left-hand stack, just barely in frame.

D'oh!  I should've spotted that!

The X-30 shows up on e-bay often; I picked up a second one (well, actually the "Orient Express" version) recently for a few bucks. Mine is done up with decals left over from shuttle, SR-71 & X-15 kits.

Very nice!  I actually have that model, but I put it together when I was a kid and it's rather poorly done.  Maybe I'll scan e-bay and see if I come across one!

There's a new kit from a company called MOEBIUS. Not sure if it's out yet but it looks real nice at 39" long! Here's a couple links for ya....

Nice collection, pad rat. I can see a couple of space 1999 models in there as well.

Some of those kits are worth a fortune. Real collectors items.

Well I finally have both Columbia and Challenger shuttle stacks 99% complete and I've started working on the next two stacks, Atlantis and Endeavor.  I'm saving Discovery for last.  In building these models I have been using Revell's older models of "Challenger with Booster Rockets" #4736, "Discovery with Booster Rockets" #4544 and the new Revell "Space Shuttle with history book" #6880.  I'm also using the new Revell of Germany "Discovery with Booster Rocket" #04736 kit.  I've noticed that the Germany kit is made of thinner platic and the fit is not as well as the US versions.  The worst fit is around the windows.  You have to use filler to fix the fit of the windows.  The payload bay doors also need attention.  I thought it was isolated to just the kit I had but after buying two more kits I noticed it's the same for each of the Revell of Germany kits.  The US issued kits don't seem to have these problems so I've been using the SRB's and ET's from the German Kit and buying cheap Orbiter Kits from e-bay.  I'm not trying to tell anyone not to buy the German kit if you want one just letting you know that the orbiter has some fit issues.  The decals from the German kit are worth the price of the kit.

Also if anyone's interested here's a tip on how I've been painting the ET.  Using Model Master 1/2 ounce bottles and pipettes I start with 2 1/2 - 3 pipettes of Floquil Railbox Yellow #F110033 then add 1 1/2 - 2 pipettes of Floquil SP Daylight Orange.  I also use about 1/2 - 1 part thinner so that I can use an airbrush to apply to the tank.  This should get you to the color of a new ET and you can darken it up from there.

Ben,

It looks like you've been paying attention to the very minute differences between different shuttle stacks (based on color differences between the ET's and boosters.)  Excellent models.

Thanks CFE,  I appreciate the positive feedback.  Yes I'm trying to model the Challenger stack as it would look back in the 80's specifically 51L.  It's not 100%  but it's getting there.  I'm still tweaking little features on it.  The rest of my models will have the modern look to them.  I still may try to pick a specific mission for each orbiter but I'll figure that out as I go along.

AWESOME job, CFE!

Send your kudos to Ben, not me.  Eventually I'll have some shuttle models to show off, but Ben rules the day with his Challenger & Columbia.

I like Ben's idea of modeling significant missions.  I was considering a 72nd scale shuttle with ET & SRB's to commemorate STS-1 and a 72nd scale orbiter in the landed configuration to represent STS-133 (hoping we complete the program w/o losing another mission.)
