Squadron.com has the Bison based VM-T Atlant for order--complete with 'cargo pod' which looks suspiciously like the Energiya core block (minus engines) looking very much like a white ET (External Tank) which is what it is most likely. The reason AN-225 was so large was to carry both Buran and a full engine-equipped Energiya core block IIRC.

So the model makers have made something as a 'cargo pod' that they probably wouldn't have offered as a 'space' kit.

So you have an Energiya Core block actually offered that wouldn't be available otherwise...

http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=IBAX72015

Or maybe the Energiya Tooling was used to make a cargo-pod--though that is unlikely since any object to be moved would have to be dense and compact--with only a small shell.  The only thing to be moved this way would therefore have to be the Energiya ET totally stripped. That's my guess anyway.

Just to interject and toot my own horn... Heeeeer's Stumpy!

The question is- will this be the first Stumpy to fly, or will it be the only Stumpy to fly?

That looks suspiciously like a rocket motor tube at the bottom of the core there...   What size motor?

I honestly hope we don't go with Stumpy.   I sincerely hope we don't spend lots of money designing and building something which drags down from STS's curernt capabilities today, instead of using the same monies to increase it's capabilities instead.

But I'd still like to see your model actually fly! ;)

LaunchComplex models or RealSpace models should consider producing a 1:72 scale external tank and booster kit.  There are plenty of orbiters of that scale on the market already.  I'd bet that just selling the tank and boosters would be profitable.  Also, has anybody tried to build them from scratch?

Well I can't speak for Glenn Johnson at RealSpace, but I'm unlikely to.

I will build whatever new launchers NASA finally settles on though.   Whenever they finally do settle...   [mumble, grumble...]

Ross said

"For my models which aren't designed to separate, I've simply drilled holes which align, and use a piece of Brass Rod to put them together - works like a charm, and is very cheap and simple.

Dunno if anyone here recalls a company called Rho-Models, run by a very nice guy named Julius de Roo, well he did a 1:144 scale Energiya/Buran model in resin. It was designed to be glued entirely together, but using this technique, mine comes apart and goes neatly back together again any time I like

Ross."

I like the brass rod idea and considered it myself, but I like the positive "click" that the headphone jacks have. I also like the magnet idea too.

An ET/SRB set for the 1/72 scale orbiters? That would be nice. The problem is only if there is enough demand for such a kit will it be made. That's probably also why Monogram didn't keep their's on sale for that long, not too many were asked for.

Perhaps it would be possible to get enough pre-orders to entice Glen to produce this kit?

I assume you mean a better 1/72 ET/SRB kit? They made a 1/72 stack for many years and it can still be found on ebay almost every week.

That's also why I said it'd be a good idea. They are so rare now no stores carry them anymore. And Ebay pricing is waay too much sometimes, depending on the bids the price can jump to even more than it was last time.

Pre order? It's not even on the list for future projects for RSM. Why not ask him? I did once when the kit was still out if he could make an intertank resin pice to replace the way the kit has it on the ET. Nope, as the kit was out and scratchbuilding it would do just as well. I did ask Glenn if he'd make the OBSS for his 1/72  Payload bay kit, and I'm still awaiting an answer. I asked as I scratchbuilt one, but it looks like crap.

Ben will your site have the rollout photos of STS-115? Close up images  from rollover you got look awesome. :)

Stumpy flies at the Maryland Delaware Rocketry Assn. launch August 26/27. See www.mdrocketry.org for time and location. Photos will be posted here.

Sweet! :)   Looking forward to seeing them zerm.

BTW: Paul - I'm fairly sure if you can bring a bunch of orders to Glenn for a 1:72 tank and SRB's, he'd make them for you.   Might take him some time, I'm sure he'll look at building just about anything which will sell reasonably well.

Zerm,

Two questions - will Dr. Zooch be making rocket kits for Stumpy and the CaLV? If so, could you go into some specifications?

Yep, hopefully Glenn might consider that. The alternative is Ebay or scratchbuilding them. The alternatives are up to the builder if they wish to spend the money and or time on that, especially when it's scratchbuilt- which would cost alot more than buying  the kit off Ebay.

Where to drum up orders? Here and on the space modelers Yahoo group?

They can be had for about $50-75 from what I've seen, so it's not that bad for a nice kit that is no longer produced.

I was not at rollout this time, unfortunately. If you're going to take a vacation in that business you have to be preparred to miss some things :-)

Oh.

Yeah, I only have one photo of a shuttle stack, and it's Columbia on 39A. Wait! The two photos of Columbia on 39A and Discovery launching. I was there about that time. Discovery was due to land the week I was there and Columbia was still on the pad.

I've got Dr. Zootch's rocket website bookmarked allready - he's got a model rocket version of the Ares I and he's supposed to be releasing a Ares V kit as well. Hopefully, he'll put out a kit based on Stumpy, because Estes or Quest never will.

As aside, how many model builders here also fly model rockets?

I have done, but my interests were leading to me the big expensive stuff and my checkbook could not follow!

We are fortunate to have some very suitable dry lake beds here in Southern Nevada, but along with the cash issue, I do not have enough time available right now.

Very enjoyable hobby I have to say!

Making the kits that no one else will make is how I make my money! Of course you actually have to "build" my kits.

I'm a member of the space modler's forum- but they are not very flying rocket friendly- if you are not there to to talk plastic, or gripe about IPMS or chat about Terry Garr they they are hair triggered to call you as being Off-topic and bam- yer' gone. A few months ago some of us had a good discussion about fins going and Mr. S. called it off topic and shut it off. I figured that was about enough for me. The better place to post is rocketryforum.com. But then again... why leave Nasaspaceflight for even a minute? ... you can miss so much.
