Can anyone tell me the font that is used for the lettering on the Orbiters (Esp. Atlantis if they're different, which I don't think they are).

Helvetica.
Substitute it with Arial at your own peril. ;)

Pfffft.  Do you take me for an amateur?  Any 10 year old could see it isn't Arial!  If I was just going to settle for Arial I wouldn't have asked the question!!  ;-)

Originally intended to be the final for the digital photography class I took last semester, I documented the construction of a paper model (specifically the Atlas Centaur 10 rocket) from start to finish.

Just completed scratchbuilding a 1/144 scale Soyuz launch pad to complement the Maquette Soyuz launch vehicle kit I built a couple of years ago.

Amazing work. I especially like 9j's atmosphere. Is an N1 in the future for you?

WOW!!! Awesome!!! Did you draw plans up for the work? If so I would gladly purchase a copy that I could scale up for my 1/48 Soyuz.

Not happy with how the paper mache turned out on the top of the ET, but oh, well.......

By the way, it's operated from behind and can be lifted about 2 feet.  There will be simulated flames from the rockets and a plume.

I have finished the 1/144 Fantastic Plastic SpaceShip2/WhiteKnight2 model.  I made the decals myself using inkjet decal film.  The SS2 and its mounting pylon have rare earth magnets embedded in them so SS2 can be separated from WK2.  The kit itself is very nice, and my only troubles were my own fault (deciding to build WK2 gear-up after I'd done the painting, only to find that the included gear doors don't work well in that configuration!).

Thanks very much for the comments posted.

No, I just work directly from photos and make measurements relative to known dimensions, such as the diameter of the payload shroud.

Keith that is excellent work on the Soyuz and launch pad.  Also good work on the Atlantis parade float and the Space Ship 2.

Here's my 747/shuttle after a full weekend of work.  And I'm not done tonight, after nightfall I'll take a break to watch fireworks IF the thunderstorms don't move in.

I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

Considering the difficulty of the project, it looks fine. Probably better than what I could do. The top of the tank is really tricky- reminds me of the trouble I has when I designed my own paper stack from scratch. Would love to see a video of it functioning...

That looks like it's coming along nicely. Reminds me that I've had one in the attic for some time and never done anything with it.

Thanks Keith.  I've finished the 747 now.  I had some issues with it so I will likely buy another one and try to do it up right but this will do on my shelf for now.

Okay my 747/shuttle is done.  I ran into some issues and will probably buy another Hase 1/200 (or Revell 1/144 kit) to try to finish it right.  But this will do for now.

Thank you Ben.

I'm pondering when I want to get back to my shuttle 6 pack.

Thank you Ben.

I'm pondering when I want to get back to my shuttle 6 pack.

You're quite welcome!

I hear you too!  I've got 3 1/144 scale stacks to complete myself and 2 1/72 stacks and a NASA Huey to complete.  I'm getting there.  I made it to the hobby shop for some putty and paint!  :D

Hello all!

I'm new to the forums, and have been spending a great deal of time reading and drooling over the projects shared in this thread.

As a kid, I had build the Revell 1/144 Columbia stack. It didn't survive long as I played with it. Now that I'm in my 40's, and the Shuttle program is ending, I wanted to build another one and do it right.

I haven't built a model since I was young, but I'm sure that I can do a decent job using the references given here. My first question (there will probably be many...) is regarding the crappy crawler that comes with the Revell Discovery 1/144 stack.

I'd like to spruce it up a bit, and add LED lights to it like the Bandai kit has. Has anyone bothered to upgrade this crawler? I'm not wanting to go overboard, but I'd like to make it look better. It's going to be a display piece in my office at work.

Any suggestions or places I can look to get ideas? Keep in mind, I'm new at this, and haven't got any experience in crafting my own parts. Heck, I don't even know where to look for supplies... :-\

I am good with working with LED's, so I'm not worried about that part, other than where to mount them.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Gary,
There are 1/144 paper models of the crawler and mobile launch platforms that are free downloads:

MLP:
http://www.axmpaperspacescalemodels.com/MobileLaunchPlatform.html

Crawler:

http://www.axmpaperspacescalemodels.com/CrawlerTransporter.html

You could use them as plans to scratchbuild your own from styrene.
