Crapola, somebody beat me to the SS2/WK2 combo.

I suspect Dyna-Soar's beautiful build is the 1/144 scale resin model from Fantastic Plastic.  It's on sale now, actually.  Nice kit.

It does not include decals, so you have to make your own.  The gorgeous insignia are notional, and are shown in PR CGI on the Virgin Galactic page, but the actual vehicles currently have more subdued markings.

My build will have the same markings as the one in these pics.  I used waterslide inkjet decal paper (white and clear) from Micromark.  I'm just putting the decals on SS2 right now, expect to be done by the end of the week.

On second look---I think Dyna-Soar's model is a paper kit!  Look at the aft fuselage fit on SS2, the markings overlap a little.  But it increases my admiration even more.

I have so much respect for the paper modelers.  I have tried paper kits before, they look like my 5-year-old son put them together with a glue stick.  I need something solid.

But the FP resin model is very nice.

My shuttle six pack has gone on a little hiatus.  A crack has been found in one of the tails and I'll try to use Tamiya white putty to repair it.

In the meantime I got myself a 1/200 Hasegawa shuttle-747 kit.  Looks like this will end up as Enterprise atop the silver 747 (N905NA)....or maybe Columbia or Challenger atop the silver jet before they repainted it white (a mistake in my opinion - it should have stayed silver as that really looked good to me).

I knew about the new Dragon space series of pre-finished display models, but it seems that at least one of the models will be available unfinished, at a very reasonable price.

The kit is the 1/72 Apollo 11 "on approach" CSM/LM with the LM legs in the stowed position.  It will even include a photoetched SM HGA.  Dragon lists it as less than $40, and it's a steal at that price!

Guys the Revell/monogram shuttle stack kit is back. :) 1/72 scale shuttle ET/SRB kit is officially back in stores now.

I got one and am using it for a new model. Well and also making resin copies of the ET and SRBs. Well the resin copies will be used to display the old ET/SRB stack look of the LWT and boosters from the mid 80s and early 90s. Other than that the kit will show the present look of the shuttle vehicle.

I saw that kit at my local hobby shop this evening.  I'm buying it on layaway as I just had a crown put on my tooth and need to pay that off first.  But I'll have it in my possession before too long.

Then I need to decide which stack to make it of.  Maybe STS-1 to complement my STS-125 stack?  Or something else?  I'm of half a mind to make the STS-30 stack (I saw STS-30 land) complete with the NASA "worm" on the right wing instead of the "meatball" on the left.

We'll see what happens.  In the meantime I've gotten started on the Hase 747/shuttle kit and have glued the fuselage together.
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

Reference for STS-1 if you decide to do that. http://www.axmpaperspacescalemodels.com/images/stack1.gif

The rectangular panel seen on the intertank can be changed. I just made a mold of the stringer pattern of the rest of that location on the tank for the present SLWET http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/022/d/6/et_patch_closeup_by_onigojirakaiju-d37rk8j.jpg

Compare that to this person's model of the original kit http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l31/JMChladek/Shuttle%20STS-117/117wip-10.jpg  Cut out the rectangular piece and replace with the resin mold. For STS-1, all you need is to cut a strip of thin styrene to glue over the resin stringer pattern.

Here are some of mine.

Here's the model I bought at the KSCVC when I went down for STS-70.

Here's how much of it I have done since then.  :D

Nice models Sarah!  I missed out on the first round of the Dragon models.  I made sure to grab the re-issued models but they don't have the flames for the SRB's.  I look forward to seeing your tower kit complete!

Good luck on the tower kit!  I have that too but haven't gotten started on the tower part.

Here's my Hase shuttle/747 combo as of last night.

I got this in the mail today!  It is definitely bigger than I thought it would be.  I already had the Monogram Challenger Orbiter and Revell of Germany Atlantis Orbiter models but I coudn't wrap my head around how big the booster and tank would be.  I'm a little disappointed in the decals for this kit.  After seeing the decals that came with 1/72 Atlantis model and the 1/144 booster kit, I was hoping they would do a better job with these decals.  I'll definitely use the ROG and aftermarket decals for this beauty!
Below you can see the difference in the decals from the Monogram booster kit, 80's Monogram Challenger kit and the ROG Atlantis Kit.

I ordered mine a couple of days ago from Megahobby in New York.  They seemed to have the best price, $79.99.  It definitely looks like a nice kit and is going to kill those people on eBay that were getting north of $300 for the old ones.  It does look like it is going to require some aftermarket decals but I buy aftermarket decals for many of my scale models.  I've been taking and accumulating off the web up close pictures of the shuttle stack to use when I build it.  And I will definitely be breaking the cellophane when it arrives next week although building it is likely a few months off.

That 1:72 model is awesome. I still have the old version still shrink wrapped. I need to find the time to build it.

Is there a 1:72 scale model of just the orbiter? I would like to build the stack but have all six orbiters to interchange with the stack. Or do I need to buy five more of these Monogram kits? Actually I might want one more stack for the STS-1 & 2 tank.

You can get paint schemes for every single flight. This is the one I used to build my 51-L stack. I can't remember where online I found these. It was a few years ago.

Revell makes just the orbiter although it isn't too much cheaper.  It is likely it includes more internal detail.  Here is a link to a friend of mine who sells it.  I believe it also has been recently repopped.

I got my stack model from www.activepowersports.com for $65.48 + $10.65 shipping for a Grand Total of $76.13 and it took less than a week to get it.  Other shops are sticking to that $95 - $100 price but I couldn't find the stack kit any cheaper online that Active Power Sports.

The Atlantis model is about $65-$70 but is a totally different model than the Monogram model.  It has a removable beanie cap on the crew compartment and mock up tiles that are way too big.  The decal sheet is the saving grace for that model.  I recently found a sealed Monogram Challenger Orbiter model for $40 on eBay but I'm sure with the program ending they will shoot up.  Just look around on eBay and I'm sure you can find one at a reasonable price unlike the stack models.

Oh, yeah you can find the paint schemes for shuttle missions here www.axmpaperspacescalemodels.com/REFERENCE.html

The Monogram kits of the shuttle are my preference.

BenB5150 what shuttle orbiter are you making with your shuttle kits?
