Really worth watching the recording of the last third of that presser, as the comments from Dave was a very rare sign of upset with the direction of the space program, at a NASA TV PAO driven event, which are normally a bit fluffy.

Being in a position where you can retire at any time can be a bit liberating.

I expect that his retirement papers will be waiting on his desk when he returns.

Had nothing to do with what he was saying. He said it wasn't do with with another servicing mission and is upset Orion isn't being developed for any science.
I didn't know Direct was? (It isn't, being rhetorical)

Isn't it sad we assume - and most often with good reason - people can only speak up, speak the truth, when in a position like he is? What kind of a system do we live in, when folks who should see problems (see them and are paid to see them), don't act because of fear? Something is fundametally wrong, not only at NASA.
Matter of fact, he is correct. Just as people were correct in 1972, after Apollo 17, seeing a hard earned capability go away. Only back then there was the promise of new, other capabilities, which came, only 9 years later. Now we will get less, much less. And space cadets were (and still are) promoting this.
Nice to have someone who speaks up his mind. Will it change much? Sadly no. [Rant over]
