With multiple runways at Edwards, why would crosswinds be an issue?

They only use one, the main concrete runway(22/04).

There's a pretty powerful and widespread storm system moving through the southeast the next few days, I might keep a little more cloudiness in the KSC forecast than they do but still not to the point of causing a problem. Sunday is a no-go for FL.

Looking at the new data and it might make sense to make sure Edwards is ready on Saturday... KSC could be a little worse than the official forecast on Saturday, and they definitely won't be landing in Florida (or apparently anywhere in the US) on Sunday.

Yesterday they told the crew that EOM and EOM+1 would be KSC only (based on their current forecast).  Plenty of time to change their minds, though.

Based on the call that even on Sunday, it would be KSC only, I'm assuming they can stay up beyond Sunday.  Hopefully we'll get the official landing strategy outlook from Richard Jones later this afternoon.

I believe one of the reasons for the late hatch closure was to preserve the cold samples for a possible EOM+3 (Tuesday).

Edit: Per the presser the samples are good through EOM+2.  There would be some degridation at EOM+3.

Per the presser the EOM+3 is still good to go, so no reason to activate the other sites this weekend. Odds are that if first opportunity at KSC is no-go, then nothing gets better until Monday.

Yeah, Monday is the "pick-em" day as Richard Jones said; Tuesday would be for systems/contingencies...

There's a major severe weather event that's been sliding along the Gulf Coast overnight, that's expected to concentrate the thick clouds and showers to the north of KSC today.

However due in part to the strength of this storm, winds will ramp up pretty quickly into the afternoon. That's really the only concern I have, but that's pretty tough to forecast until the we get closer to noontime today. The NWS forecast at landing time says winds out of the south sustained at 19mph with gusts to 27mph, which thanks to the runway orientation would be close to (if not over) the crosswind limits. Patrick AFB has a similar outlook.

I'm not sure if SMG will update their presentation today, but here is Friday's: http://www.srh.noaa.gov/images/rtimages/smg/Landing_Wx.ppt

Due to early station departure to accommodate Soyuz, Discovery has sufficient consumables to allow an on-orbit stay thru Thursday. Not sure about the down mass condition however.

Hopefully the weather system to the north stays far enough away that Fla remains viable for today. I plan to be at KSC for the landing and would hate to leave without Discovery being home.

A) What's CIG?

B) What's the gust limit? Online weather reports show gusts over 30 mph now.

A) What's CIG?
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/smg/fcstint.htm

Following the forecast section, flight rule violations are
highlighted on a station by station basis.
       Violations Include:  CIG = Ceiling
                           SHRA = Rain Showers
                           TSRA = Thunderstorms
                          XWIND = Crosswinds

On the gust limits, Rob knows that well, but there's also a general weather guideline here:
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/smg/wxcrit.htm

Quote
2.  Peak winds may not exceed the average wind speed by more than 10 knots.

The end of mission landing weather forecast is prepared by the NOAA National Weather Service Spaceflight Meteorology Group in Houston for the astronauts, Flight Director and Mission Management Team.  All criteria refer to observed and forecast weather conditions. Decision time for the de-orbit burn is 70 - 90 minutes before landing.  The weather criteria are:

- Cloud coverage of 4/8 or less below 8,000 feet and a visibility of 5 miles or greater required.

-  The peak cross wind cannot exceed 15 knots, 12 knots at night.  If the mission duration is greater than 20 days the limit is 12 knots, day and night.

-  Headwind cannot exceed 25 knots.

-  Tailwind cannot exceed 10 knots average, 15 knots peak.

-  No thunderstorm, lightning, or precipitation activity is within 30 nautical miles of the landing site.

-  Detached opaque thunderstorm anvils less than three hours old must not be within 20 nautical miles of the landing field, or within 10 nautical miles of the flight path when the orbiter is within 30 nautical miles of the runway.

-  Turbulence must be less than or equal to moderate intensity.

-  Consideration may be given for landing with a “no go” observation and a “go” forecast if at decision time analysis clearly indicates a continuing trend of improving weather conditions, and the forecast states that all weather criteria will be met at landing time.

Winds from 170* at 15kts with gusts to 23kts as of 10:55am EDT, so not exceeding limits. Peak wind in the last hour was 29kts from due south at 10:40am. Overcast at 20,000ft but that's not an issue.

Scattered isn't a violation...if you look at the last posted SMG forecast, they note the ceiling concern is a slight chance of a broken layer at 4k for the 1st opportunity and at 5k for the 2nd.  (Ceiling limit is 8k.)

So, if I understand right, we're currently go forecast go, but not at all far from the limits so that could change easily.

I've not heard any news on a report from the STA, it wouldn't surprise me if the STA thought things were good enough. The limits are well below the certified limits anyways. At least we're going according to the forecast so far!

I've not heard any news on a report from the STA, it wouldn't surprise me if the STA thought things were good enough. The limits are well below the certified limits anyways. At least we're going according to the forecast so far!
Along with the input from the weather pilot at KSC, I guess a question is what the forecast is, versus current observation.

New forecast from SMG - they say no worries about winds, just a low cloud layer. I disagree.
Moot point, since they've waived off the 1st rev, but am I reading the SMG forecast sheet right?  Seems like the broken deck forecast at 3k would be an issue...

You are reading that right, SMG is only worried about clouds, not winds. I'm really not that worried about clouds, more the winds. We'll see...

I don't see any reason to be more optimistic for 2nd try conditions, I wouldn't expect much change if any from what we're dealing with now.

I did come to the weather thread to see what has been posted.  I will post the NWS wind Advisory here also.

... Lake Wind Advisory in effect from 11 am this morning to 6 PM
EDT this evening...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a lake Wind
Advisory... which is in effect from 11 am this morning to 6 PM EDT
this evening.

The pressure gradient between a ridge of high pressure over the
western Atlantic and a developing storm system over the Central
Plains is forecast as the storm intensifies and moves northeast
today.

South winds will increase to around 20 mph across all of east
central Florida with occasional gusts up to 30 mph. Conditions
will be particularly hazardous on area lakes... and open waterways
such as the intracoastal.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Strong and gusty winds will create rough and hazardous boating
conditions on area lakes and the intracoastal waters. This may
result in high waves which may tip or swamp small craft.

I am with rdale here. I am no weather guru but from my little understading of the matter doesn't look like the situation could be changing in the next few hours; if the clouds stay there the winds will be as well.

Are all three landing sites still forecast to be "no-go" for tomorrow?  Looked that way earlier ... just wondered if anything had changed.

3/8ths scattered at 3500ft, overcast at 20000ft has broken up a bit to 7/8ths. Winds though still an issue, due south at 22kts sustained with gusts to 30kts just these past few minutes.

Looks like NASA TV showed some of a weather briefing.  Nice zoomed in satellite loop showing a cloud street right over the runway that must have been the worry.  Slight shift in wind direction and maybe we're in business again.

Not really the clouds, they've been close but never violated the rules. Winds are still the concern, but latest ob dropped the speeds dramatically (12 gusting to 26kts).

Sea breeze is visible on hi-res doppler radar, it's just now moving across the landing strip.

Winds have picked up just a bit again, sustained 16kts with gusts to 24kts but overall trending better. No change in clouds.

Wind vanes at south and central part of the strip are out of 150 degrees, but the north one is still 170*.

If the sea breeze is reliable as they seem to know it will be... That could change the situation. or looks like.

It's not quite a slam dunk - Patrick AFB has been on the "good side" of the sea breeze for a while but they have even stronger winds than KSC does.

Weather would have been acceptable had they tried landing this time, and even better than forecast. That's the fun of this field ;)

All 3 KSC sensors within limits, right down the runway at 150* with sustained 14kts gusting to 21kts. So strong, but no violations.

Cannot rely on the sea breeze then... I don't see such stable condition to take the risk, but of course they know better.
