12-01-2009 Plesetsk Space Port: Coronas-Photon Prelaunch Processing

NPP VNIIEM experts continue prelaunch processing of the Coronas-Photon spacecraft and its scientific payloads. The spacecraft is to be launched on Jan. 29, 2009.

CORONAS (Complex Orbital Observations Near-Earth of Activity of the Sun) is a Russian program aimed at studying physics of the Sun and solar-terrestrial links by series of spacecrafts, which covers operations of three solar-oriented satellites in the near-Earth orbit.

CORONAS-PHOTON is the third satellite in this series. Two previous missions of the project are CORONAS-I (launched on March 2, 1994) and CORONAS-F (launched on July 31, 2001). CORONAS-PHOTON is a part of the International Living With a Star Program (ILWS).

Coronas-Photon is developed by two Russian Federal Space Agency`s companies: NPP VNIIEM – Iosifyan Russian R&D Electromechanics Institute and Plant, and NIIEM – Research Institute for Electromechanics (Moscow region, Istra). CORONAS-PHOTON is developed under the Russian Federal Space Program implemeted by the Federal Space Agency.

Thank you for these, nice page they have prepared.

Interesting contrast to see the orange thermal cloth Russians use, for those of us so used to seeing the aluminized thermal blankets common in comsats and Western spacecraft.

Best chance will be news coverage, but RKA do occasionally provide webcasts.

Well I did email RKA about whether or not they will provide a webcast, but i am not expecting a response considering my e-mail was in English and not Russian, however fingers crossed.

Recently, I read this Koronas was intended to use the same bus as the other two which were previously launched (Koronas I and Koronas Fyzika) but that one was Ukranian and went for a Meteor bus instead. Anyone has further details about the impact and causes of this?

Also, now the Koronas program will be finished with its last launch, is there any succesor project in the horizon?

The launch has been postponed indefinitely, according to RIA NOVOSTI.

RIA Novosti is saying that the launch is delayed to its 'postponed day' because of technical reasons. So, can this mean that we have a 24 hour delay?

The reason of delay was - blowoff(or dump?) valve on 2nd stage failed prestart test. Problem solved, and next try will be Friday 16.30 (Moscow time) launch window 15 min.

TASS at 0340 gmt Jan 30 says delay is now 'indefinite'. The State Commission will decide shortly.

Excerpt: ""The reason of the delay is the faulty onboard equipment of the second stage of the rocket, which was exposed during pre-start checks," the official said adding fuel is being discharged from the booster."

Having read that article, I think that they may still be trying for today, but I'm not sure.

According to a publication today at Vesti.ru:

http://www.vesti.ru/doc.html?id=247521&cid=10

They are going to launch today.

They also mention that the rocket is old and this has contributed to the problem.

Good. If Vesti have published something about it there's a good chance of live coverage.

Let's hope this goes better than the last Ukrainian launch on 30 January...

They also mention that the rocket is old and this has contributed to the problem.

This is generally beleived to be the last Tsyklon-3 (and probably the last Tsyklon of any description, unless the Tsyklon-4 is developed).

Spacecraft separation should occur at 17:14, about 20 minutes from now. After this, I hope I will hear whether everything has happened according to plan.

OK people.

We have information:

http://www.tesis.lebedev.ru/project_diary.html

They confirm that the first and the second stages of the rocket have worked. We don't have confirmation that the third stage has worked. The first radiosignal of the spacecraft should be received at 18:02 Moscow time. This means yet another 40 minutes of tense waiting.

That's very good!

Thanks Svetoslav for your updates!

In such times I sometimes remember several other situations in the past. I remember when we expected the controllers to hear the first signals from Beagle 2, or Cosmos 1. We know that everything is over. There's nothing we can do. The spacecraft may have failed or may have launched (landed) successfully. We just sit down and wait for confirmation.

I still have no information about whether we have received radiosignals. Still waiting.

According to RussianSpaceWeb.com:

Quote
According to Russian space officials, the Koronas-Foton spacecraft separated from the third stage of the launch vehicle at 17:14 Moscow Time, as planned.

By the way, here's one informative site of the whole Koronas platform (English-translated version):

We have a signal! Solar panels have deployed successfully! We have normal pressure, we have a good spacecraft!

Mission control still provides us with regular updates. Looks like they have acheived basic orientation using "hard" sensors "with a field of view, equal to one hemisphere", whatever this could mean. They also say they are planning to switch to normal orientation with basic sensors with a field of view of 6 degrees.

We have information that the second set of telemetric data has been received successfully. The spacecraft reports that the temperature and pressure is normal.

While we still don't have launch photos, we have some photos of the mission control room and the team.

And just to confirm, this is the last ever Tsyklon-3 launch?
Last Tsyklon-3. But as far as I know there are still 6 Tsyklon-2 available.

The guys from Mephi institute say that the spacecraft is currently undergoing technical tests. First information will be available no earlier than the 3rd of Feb.

You may also find this fact interseting - since this is the last Tsyklon-3 launch it's launch pad will be upgraded for Angara LVs.

According to ARMS-TASS, there was only one Tsyklon of any type remaining prior to this launch (ie. the entire family has now been retired, excluding the proposed Tsyklon-4):

I thought they were upgrading the old Soyuz pad. Didn't the Ukrainian space agency want to retain site 32 for the Tsyklon-4.

Old Zenit pad. But this one planned for smallest Angara-1, if that one will be crowded.

Some stills from same.

This Tsyklon seemed to be painted up in an "old style" not seen for a few years.  Might this have been done as a "farewell" gesture?

Which one? Site 35?

I had heard that Site 41 was being converted as well.

Yes, "Site 35" was planned for Zenit, then for "universal launch pad" for Angara. Maybe you mean "Вuilding 142" on site 41, which planned as MIK for Angara, pad there was for R7/Soyuz - dismantled long ago, 1989-90.

According to the press services this was an old rocket, so probably this was its original paint.

Silly question, I know - we're talking Russia here - but is there a source, however patchy, of hi-res launch pics, such as this last Tsyklon flight?  (Rarities like Kristall/Kvant/Priroda/even Mir itself spring to mind). It'd be nice to have at least *one* good shot of that marque now she's been retired...

Nice picture.

That proves that launch was from 32/2.

Koronas-Foton has experienced several anomalies (in part, apparently, caused by its Meteor-derived design) Controllers are trying to salvage it, but there are serious concerns further scientific observations will not be possible...
